. . . My Christmas gifts to my grandniece and Mom . . .

For several months earlier this year, I renovated my grandmother's (deceased) house. One thing I did was remove six 1970s-style room divider spindles.

I almost threw them away, but at the last minute saved them, thinking perhaps I could find a project that reuses them. I don't have a lathe (yet), so I hesitate from discarding items which I can't readily duplicate.

So I ended up cutting the ends off and using them to build three child step stools. One for my grandniece, Emma, one for my Mom, and a third for an aunt with her own great-grandchildren.

You can see from the last photo that I stripped varnish from them, using citrus stripper. Very effective. But with turned wood, you're dealing with 90% end grain, so changing the stain color is challenging. So a walnut with some additional gray was used. And I painted one for a little variety.

These will be great in the bathroom and kitchen for kids needing some extra height.

Spindles, stair spindles and stool legs are available at and , so anyone could build a similar step stool from readily available parts. And those with turning skills have no limits to what they can create.

I feel good knowing Emma has something that belonged to her great-great-grandmother. Hopefully, it will be an heirloom she passes down to her own grandchildren.

. . . Well, the rental house reno is done! OK, that's not accurate. The truth is closer to I'm done, had it, with the rental house.

Last step was to steam mop the bathroom, kitchen, and sunroom. I'm using the Shark Genius steam mop I picked up from . You can see how much dirt it picked up on the first pass by the pad you see on top. I've flipped the head over to use the clean side for the second pass.

Guys, if you're looking for that perfect Christmas gift for that special lady, this is it! But seriously, I do think it works well and I recommend it.

This sunroom is the back entry to a very modest 1952 rural house, and should function well as a mudroom.

. . . TBT to what I should have started last year around this time, but waited until a week before Christmas . . . An adjustable-height child's art desk I made for my grandniece, Emma.

It features a banded plywood top, painted with chalkboard paint, for those days when no one wants to clean up paint. The paper roll holder makes it easy to keep inexpensive paper always ready for . . . uh . . . emergency art . . .

The wood choice was Western Red Cedar. I selected tight-grained pieces with minimal knots. I looks like a bit like mahogany. It features the quarter-ellipse feet that I'm fond of.

If you'd like a free copy of the plan, email me (address in my profile). When I get back home next week, I'll email you a copy.

. . . alright.. . . I admit it . . . I have issues with outlet covers and switch covers.

Mother Blackwater and I are doing the final cleaning on the rental house . . . and I can't take the shoddy appearance of every room due to these dirty, mismatched outlets any longer.

The LEFT PIC is typical of EVERY outlet in the house. And the light switches are even worse. The RIGHT PIC is the SAME outlet after removing the white faceplate, wiping the outlet clean (power is off), scraping off some sloppy painting, and installing a matching ivory faceplate . . . Five minutes and less than 40 cents each . . . I'm going to sleep better tonight.

Here's a photo of the very dated "Brady Bunch" kitchen and dining room.

I put up the last shade today. THESE TWO ROOMS HAVE AN INCREDIBLE 11 WINDOWS (one is behind me) . . .

I'm trying to play up the rental home's strengths. In this case, it's a floor plan blessed with great natural lighting, a large living room, a large kitchen, and a curved wall of windows in the dining room.

To emphasize the natural lighting, all the pleated shades are light-filtering, rather than room darkening.

I bound each shade with blue painter's tape, and cut them to fit with my sliding miter saw. Fitting them inside the sashes gives inexpensive pleated shades a custom look.

Not pictured, but the adjoining living room has a mere eight windows.
