Large bowls and custom orders.
I get asked about large bowls and whether I take custom order requests for them. I used to try to accommodate these requests but now the answer is no.
Large bowls like this one (finished size 15” x 5”) require a starting blank (piece of wood) of about 16” x 6”, in a perfect world where you’re not removing extra material to remove imperfections etc. This is not lumber that you can purchase cost effectively that is already milled. So it has to come directly from a tree log. A large tree log. Then processed into bowl blanks.
Because of this I have chosen to only make these sized bowls when I’m given the opportunity from fallen or failing trees being cut on my own property or the surrounding area. Which makes availability of the right sized bowl blanks sporadic at best. But also makes each large scale bowl I make even more special, as I have no intension of mass production of them or cutting down healthy trees to source the material that allows for their creation.
I am currently processing/drying large bowls in red oak and cherry from two uprooted trees on our property. They should be ready for purchase in a few months. It’s a long process from tree to bowl and they finish in their own time when you start with fresh green wood.
If you’re looking for something for yourself or a gift that is already ready to go, you can check out the Etsy shop (link in bio). Items listed are ready to ship and get sent out usually within two business days of ordering. If you’re waiting on a cherry bowl. Keep an eye out for updates as they get closer to being available. 😊
