There was a town on the mainland side of Dare County with a school, a post office and a reputation, and today you can drive past the whole thing without knowing it was ever there. 🌲

East Lake sat on the peninsula between the Alligator River and Croatan Sound, in country that was mostly black water, juniper swamp and pocosin. People fished, cut timber, farmed a little, and during Prohibition they made wh***ey. A great deal of wh***ey. East Lake corn liquor developed a name up and down the eastern seaboard, and boats ran it north out of the sounds by night.

When Prohibition ended, the money went with it. The timber played out. Families drifted to Manteo, to Norfolk, to wherever there was work. The school closed. Houses were abandoned or moved, and the swamp began doing what swamps do, which is take the ground back one season at a time. 🌊

Drive Highway 64 across that stretch now and it is mostly wildlife refuge and dark water. There was a whole community out there, and its most famous export was something nobody was supposed to be making.
