Black Moldovan Elephant (Juodas Moldaviskas Dramblýs)
Shared by Rimantė VB, this family heirloom carries both history and exceptional flavor. The name translates to Black Moldovan Elephant in Lithuanian and traces back to seeds bought in 1986 from a Moldovan market. The original seeds, labeled Chyornyy Slon, were likely mixed, giving rise to this unique and delightful tomato.
Unlike the Russian Chyornyy Slon (Black Elephant), which is potato leaf, this variety is regular leaf. Plants are short and robust, growing 120–140 cm tall, and produce medium-sized beefsteaks (4–9 oz / 150–250 g) with a purplish-brown hue and deep green shoulders. Fruits are balanced, full-flavored, with a smooth, meaty texture that shines with rich, sweet notes and hints of smokiness.
