🧡 Meet the newest member of the Maine Salty Girl workshop crew… Yogi! 🐾
This sweet little orange-striped guy has quickly appointed himself Workshop Supervisor, Driftwood Inspector & Chief Entertainment Officer. 😂
Yogi keeps us laughing all day with his endless curiosity, playful antics, and his need to investigate absolutely EVERYTHING we’re working on. Apparently no piece of driftwood, cardboard box, or packing material can enter the workshop without his official inspection. 😹
He may not be very productive yet… but he sure is cute! 🧡

A few tricks of the trade… learned the hard way. 😂⛵️🎨
Hand-lettering these model sailboat sails looks pretty simple, right?
Yeah… not so much. 😆
The sails are made from a synthetic fabric, and paint does NOT behave nicely on it. One wrong move and it bleeds right into the fibers—and there’s no erasing, sanding it off, or pretending it didn’t happen.
Let’s just say a few innocent sails were sacrificed while I figured out exactly how much paint to use, how much pressure to apply, and how to get those crisp little letters without the paint spreading. 😂
But that’s part of creating something new around here. Lots of experimenting, a little swearing, a few “well, THAT didn’t work” moments…and eventually figuring out the tricks that make it work.
Now hand-lettering the sails has become one of my favorite parts. 💙
No vinyl. No printed lettering. Just a tiny brush, a steady hand, and a few hard-earned tricks of the trade.

Here’s the basics for hand-lettering a model sailboat, or anything, for that matter!

I like to use acrylic chalk paint. It tends to not bleed into the fabric like regular acrylics.

This weekend’s wedding arch setup was an extra-special one… it was for my niece, Jennifer Herne, and her new husband, Nico! 🤍

The road trip to Sweden, Maine, started with my two little traveling companions—Piggie, my sweet pooch, and Yogi, my new baby kitty. I love having my critters close by while I’m creating… even when the “workshop” is a boys’ summer camp in the Maine woods!

Jennifer and Nico were married at Camp Encore/Coda, with the whole weekend centered around a summer camp theme. Family and friends stayed in rustic—and I mean very rustic—cabins by the lake, with games and activities planned throughout the weekend.

There was a pig roast for dinner, Prickly Pear Margaritas as the specialty cocktail, and one very proud auntie setting up the wedding arch. 😊

It was relaxed, fun, completely original and so perfectly them. Jennifer and Nico’s special day couldn’t have been more beautiful! Congratulations, you two! 💕

From AI inspiration to real Maine driftwood. 🌊

A woman from Bar Harbor sent me an AI-created image of a driftwood wall sculpture and asked, “Could you make something similar?”

Challenge accepted!

I gathered a bunch of interesting branches from my storage barn and brought them up to Sarah Shields’ family camp. Sarah Shields, Sarah Armstrong and I spent the day arranging and rearranging the pieces—taking plenty of breaks to lounge by the lake, of course.

Once we found just the right balance, we screwed the branches together, and I brought the finished sculpture back to the workshop to add hangers.

This is how it looks in its new home! I love that an image created by AI became something real, made by three friends, a pile of Maine driftwood and a lovely day at the lake.
