If you've heard any advice from Oprah (other than all women are wearing the wrong size bra) it's probably "turn your passion into your profession". In 2004, I did just that and Ellen Virden Paint Consulting was born. I'd been helping friends choose their paint colors for years, but never dreamed I could actually do it as a job. With some encouragement from my family and a local painter, I decided

to dive right in -- and I've never looked back. What started as a tiny business to help people pick their paint colors, has evolved into a tiny business that helps people pick paint colors AND so much more. So today, 8 years and 3 months since I had my first business cards printed, I'm officially launching my new company -- Get a Room Interiors. This name more accurately represents who I am and what I do. It's snarky, sarcastic and conveys that I am more than just a lady who chooses paints. How'd I get the name "Get a Room"? Glad you asked. Well, I held a contest on Facebook to name my new company. Several dozen names were tossed around. Some cracked me up; some made me wince. But none stuck. I was in name limbo for weeks. I knew the right name would find me, I just never would've guessed how. Here's how (lamely) it went down. My two oldest daughters on a Saturday afternoon: "Hey, we're going to play the Game of Life, want to join us? My husband: "Get a Life!!"
Me: "Get a room!"

I admit it's a totally weird thing to say to, and in the presence of, your own kids, but mostly I said it for my husband's reaction. It was quickly followed by me saying, "Wait. I think I just named my company!!"

And that's the net net of it. Thank you to all my past clients; most of whom are repeat customers and my biggest source of business. Without your referrals I'd be nowhere. Whether your job is a couple of rooms or a whole house, I'd love to see how we can work together. It'll be fun and productive. It always is. Remember: Life's too short to live in house that sucks.

I’ve worked with this amazing client for years on countless house projects and all discussions led back to the kitchen. She was “over” the orangey cabinets for years, but painting them felt so daunting. Finally, she was ready for a major transformation and I couldn’t have been more excited for this kitchen to be worthy of the rest of this beautiful house.

It’s not often you see slab front cabinetry, oversized hardware and soapstone countertops, but here they are in all their glory. My client is so happy with the outcome and so am I.

Thank you The Coo Coo's Nest — you killed it.

What do you guys think?

It’s been a hella long time since I posted and this one is worth the wait. My client had A LOT of house projects she wanted to take on. We were juggling like Barnum and Bailey was holding tryouts.

As for this kitchen, we put a lot of thought into the cabinet color. The kitchen faces North and that made the choice a little tricky, but we ultimately landed on Ben Moore’s Natural Cream and think it was a home run. It was my first time using it on cabinetry, but it won’t be the last.

The new island was fabricated by a cabinet maker. It’s maple with a custom stain. We purchased new quartz for the island and were happy we found something to “play nicely” with the existing solid surface counters which we kept on the perimeter cabinets.

I’ve been enamored for a couple of years by these island pendants and was so excited when my client said they were in her budget. The mercury glass is stunning! When figuring out pendant locations, we centered them over the island but subtracted out the area where the cooktop is. This way, the pendants were free and clear of any splattering or steam coming from the cooktop.

How pretty are the new pantry cabinets? The stain is the same as the island and really makes this kitchen look so high-end and customized.

The backsplash is a mother of pearl tile and fits my client’s style so perfectly. She loves everything “sparkly” and this scratched that itch, but is still kitchen-friendly.

The floor on the entire first floor also got a makeover. We had the contractors install LVP right on top of the existing and beat-up original hardwoods.

Other projects: new paint on first floor, new lighting, powder room gut, primary bath glow up. More photos to come!

Look in the comments for a few more photos of this kitchen!

In the name of hard hitting journalism, I ventured out into the tundra of Arundel Mills to check out the new Wayfair Outlet. Follow along in my photo and video journey below. According their website, many of the items have been returned or are discontinued. Beware: all sales are final.

Please lmk if you’ve been, plan to go or will never make the trek. I love your feedback!

If you saw yesterday’s post, you might recall the “before” picture that showed a rustic surfboard hanging on the powder room wall. Needless to say, it did not go with the new hot pink leafy wallpaper, butI was not ready to ditch the surfboard completely. I walked around our tiny beach bungalow looking for its new home. See what you think. And…my love of all things pink also got the best of me.

A fun little before and after beach house powder room.

Thank you to my girl Lisa for her wallpapering prowess and my own personal Dwayne F Schneider for the shiplapping.

See the surfboard in the before photo? More to come on that tomorrow!

Had 3 back-to-back clients today — the middle one, virtually. I popped into Target thinking I could sit in Starbucks, but there are zero tables and chairs. Anyone know when or why?

In any case, I marched back to the Home section looking for an upholstered chair to cozy-up in and again, no dice. So with the clock ticking, I threw together a makeshift office and sat there for an hour with all the necessities — ear buds, readers, iPad, water bottle and storage pouf with throw pillow booster seat. I got a lot of looks, but meeting went great! Thanks Tar-jay! 🎯
