I will die on this hill. As a consumer who is doing a renovation, you should have a full understanding of what your project will cost. Not a guesstimate. An estimate is an estimate because who does know what lies behind the wall or how many layers of flooring we’ll find? But an estimate full of allowances for finishes, fixtures and materials- this creates a landslide of mess for everyone. You do not have a clear understanding of your investment if you start your project without having solid selections made. Not just because of the material or fixture itself, but because of the implications of how that selection could effect the labor and materials to install it.
