A dear friend yesterday asked me what my favorite find was. Possibly this, though there have been so many. The only complete Throne Room Chair from Tuileries, First Empire. Originally one of six, ordered for Napoleon’s Coronation. Designed by Percier and Fontaine. Made by Jacob Desmalter. It had every stamp and label, from the original upholsterer’s label to Tuileries burn stamp, a label under later Charles X and even a number when a princess demanded to of the six be used in her apartment in the later 19th century. I bought this from a private collector in NYC who acquired it from the actor, George Hamilton in Palm Beach. I bought this when I was 22 years old and kept it until about ten years ago when I sold it at Sotheby’s London. A wonderful side note is when I purchased it, the owner of Prelle, Philippe Verzier, invited me to Paris to tour the Mobilier National with curator, Madame Coural, to see the chair’s original fabric and looms and to view the French Cultural storage of treasures. Mme Coural opened drawers and pulled out fabrics with original notes from Marie-Antionette pinned to them until she reached the amazing samples of the clipped velvet burgundy fabric from this chair. I think this chair allowed me the greatest access to unseen decorative arts that I could have imagined. Not a bad start as a young antique dealer right out of college with a biology degree.
