One-on-one lessons are exactly what they sound like: focused time with us, working on the skill you actually want to learn.

You can book a one-on-one for any technique we specialize in, but they are especially helpful for refinishing.

For painting, we already offer group classes. Painting 101 is designed for beginners or anyone who wants to brush up on the basics, and Painting 201 moves into more advanced finishes and techniques.

Refinishing is different.

There is no group refinishing class, because every piece brings its own questions. Wood species, old finishes, damage, stain absorption, stripping, sanding, color choices, and topcoats can all change the process.

That is why refinishing works so well one-on-one.

Bring in a small piece of your own, purchase one from Furniture Rescue, or, if your project is too large to transport easily, bring in a drawer or two so we can work through the process together.

You get hands-on instruction, answers specific to your project, and the confidence to keep going when you get home.

What piece of furniture would you never buy new?

Some pieces are just better with age.

Older furniture often has better materials, better craftsmanship, and more character than a lot of what is being made today. A little wear does not scare us. In many cases, it is part of the charm.

For us, the list might include dressers, dining tables, sideboards, nightstands, and bookcases. Solid wood, great bones, and timeless style will win every time.

If one rocker runner breaks, replacing just that one is not always the best repair.

For a rocking chair to move smoothly, the two runners need to match. Their curve, length, thickness, and placement all work together. Replacing both runners as a pair helps ensure that the chair rocks evenly instead of feeling uneven or awkward.

Not every damaged runner needs to be replaced. If a small piece has broken off the tip, or there is a chip or localized area of damage, that can often be repaired.

But if the runner has a complete break through the wood at a stress point, replacement is usually the better long-term solution.

When we replace runners, we make them from hardwood so they are strong, durable, and built to give the chair years of smooth rocking.

And sometimes we go one step further.

We have even taken a well-loved family wingback chair and turned it into a rocker by designing and adding a completely new set of runners.

That is one of the things I love about furniture repair. Sometimes the goal is not just to put something back the way it was.

What exactly would you do with this?

This wonderfully quirky little cabinet started as the rather plain piece you see in the before photo. We painted the wood a deep black, protected it with a durable topcoat, kept that fabulous vintage galvanized metal top, and added the Willie Bird artwork. The Willie Bird decoupage tissue is from , and it was exactly the personality this cabinet needed.

Then we gave it one more surprise: bright orange casters.

Originally, the cabinet sat directly on the floor. Adding wheels gave it another pop of color, but it also made the piece much more versatile. Now it can move easily wherever it is needed instead of being committed to one spot.

Use it as a bar, an oversized nightstand, kitchen storage, a toy cabinet, craft storage, a printer cabinet, a record cabinet, a mudroom catch-all, or just that one completely unexpected piece in a room that makes everyone ask where you found it.

The old metal top is one of my favorite details. It still has its original stamped markings, which give the piece a little industrial history and make the top feel like more than just a surface.

And those orange wheels?

Definitely not an accident.

Does your seat sag?

Sometimes the problem is not the foam at all. It is what is underneath it.

Older upholstered chairs often have webbing that has stretched, weakened, or simply reached the end of its useful life. And some chairs were built with lower-quality strapping that was never especially strong to begin with.

We replace it with jute webbing, the traditional upholstery webbing you may recognize by the red stripes running through it.

Those straps do a very important job. They create the foundation underneath the foam and cushions, so they need to be stretched extremely tight and strong enough to support the weight of someone actually sitting in the chair. If the webbing underneath is sagging, even beautiful new foam and fabric cannot do their jobs properly.

When we are reupholstering a chair, we can replace tired or inadequate webbing as part of the job and rebuild the seat from the foundation up.

Because sometimes your seat does not need more padding.

It needs better support.

A wobbly chair seems like a simple problem.

Sometimes it is.

Sometimes it absolutely is not.

When a chair starts moving at the joints, the problem is often old glue that has failed, joints that no longer fit tightly, or years of movement that have gradually loosened the structure.

Adding more glue from the outside may make it feel better for a little while, but it does not necessarily fix what is happening inside the joint.

A proper repair can mean carefully taking the loose parts apart, removing the failed glue, checking the joints for damage or wear, making any needed repairs, and then reassembling and clamping everything so the chair is structurally sound again.

That is why two chairs that both “wobble” can need completely different repairs.

Book bundles are one of those projects that look wonderfully styled when they’re finished, but are actually very easy and fun to make.

Start with a stack of old books, give them a little paint and personality, and then make them mean something.

They can be simple decor, or they can become a really personal gift.

For a new baby, add the baby’s name, birth date, weight and length. For a wedding, add “Mr. & Mrs.” and the wedding date. For an anniversary, put one child’s name on each spine. For a new homeowner, use the latitude and longitude of the new house. For a college graduate, add their name, graduation date and degree.

You could also commemorate a favorite vacation with the location and dates, celebrate a retirement, mark the year a family was established, list grandchildren’s names, remember a special hometown, add a favorite quote, or create a bundle around a holiday or family tradition.

Use them on a coffee table, bookshelf, entry table, mantel, desk, or as part of a centerpiece. Add ribbon, twine, stamps, greenery or seasonal accents and make them as simple or elaborate as you like.

Best of all, this is a project that does not require a lot of experience. No complicated tools. No giant piece of furniture. Just a few simple techniques, some creativity, and lots of room to make it personal.

And they are especially fun to make with a friend.

Some days, furniture restoration is elegant craftsmanship.

Other days, it is staring at a bent screw and wondering what exactly happened here.

Was it overtightened? Forced into the wrong hole? Installed at a questionable angle by someone with tremendous confidence and very little information?

We may never know.

What we do know is that tiny hardware problems can create surprisingly big furniture problems. A bent screw can keep a joint from pulling tight, throw hardware out of alignment, or make a perfectly repairable piece act much more dramatic than it needs to.

So yes, sometimes the glamorous world of furniture restoration comes down to removing one ridiculous little screw and starting over properly.

Sometimes the perfect piece does not exist yet.

This client had a very specific list of requirements. The base needed to fit a particular footprint. The style had to feel right for their cottage. And the finished top needed generous overhangs on the sides, but not on the front and back.

Then they found this old washstand.

The base was almost exactly the right size, and the style was perfect. The problem was the finish. It was in rough condition, and the existing top was made from a different wood that never really looked like it belonged with the rest of the piece anyway.

So we treated the washstand as the starting point rather than the finished answer.

We removed the original top, built a new one from a salvaged mahogany table, sized it to create the deep side overhangs they wanted, and then refinished the entire piece so everything worked together.

The result is something that feels completely custom, because in a way, it is.

Instead of starting with new materials, we combined two older hardwood pieces and gave both of them a new purpose. The client got the exact footprint, proportions and style they needed, and the finished piece has a history no catalog version could duplicate.

That is one of my favorite kinds of furniture project: when the answer is not “find the perfect piece.”

It is “build the perfect piece from what already exists.”

Would you save this club chair?

At first glance, a broken leg can make a chair look like it has reached the end of the road. But that is exactly the kind of damage we like to look at more closely before making that call.

With older upholstered furniture, the question is not just, “Is something broken?”

We look at the frame, the construction, the condition of the other joints, the quality of the chair, and whether the damaged area can be rebuilt strongly enough to put the piece safely back into service.

Sometimes the answer is no.

But sometimes one dramatic-looking break is just one repair standing between a favorite chair and many more years of use.

That is why we always say: before you throw it out, let somebody who understands furniture take a look.
