Some furniture is valuable because of who it belonged to.
This beautiful kidney-shaped writing table fell into the second category.
The table belonged to our customer's father, and she wanted to preserve it so it could continue to be used and enjoyed for years to come. Structurally, the writing surface was in good condition, showing only the minor wear and scratches that come from decades of faithful use.
The real challenge was hidden along the scalloped edge. At some point during storage, the finish softened and became bonded to the packing materials surrounding the table. Paper, fabric, and other debris became embedded deep into the finish, creating extensive damage around the entire perimeter.
To restore it properly, we carefully stripped away the contaminated finish, removed the embedded material, sanded the surface smooth, rebuilt the finish, and applied a new protective topcoat. The challenge was that the writing surface itself remained in beautiful condition, so the restoration had to be performed without disturbing the original finish on the top.
Once the edge restoration was complete, we deep cleaned, conditioned, and waxed the writing surface to bring back its warmth and luster.
The project required a significant amount of careful restoration work, but seeing this family piece returned to service made every step worthwhile. Most importantly, our customer was thrilled to know that her father's desk will continue to be part of her home for many years to come.
