Long time… No see! 👀

Life got crazy and we haven’t made it back here in awhile. Summer took us on some unexpected turns and we’ve been busy with other things and did not reopen as planned. I’ve missed working in the shoppe and seeing everyone. However, family and our health must come first. I promise to be back once things settle.

For now, I’ll share our latest addition upstairs… A washer & dryer! This set is nestled in a laundry closet in our new bathroom. A simple design and top loading washer were two things on our list. We found both in this commercial duo. The Plan is to hang a curtain across the front.

I just wanted to stop in and say “hello” as we head in to an even busier Fall! 🤍🖤🤍

Stay tuned…

With one project almost complete, we have already started thinking about the next…

Our kitchen will be in the mezzanine, which has housed a photography studio and clothing boutique. It is the floor between the downstairs shoppe and the upstairs loft. There is so much beautiful light in this area! It is the perfect spot for a kitchen!

There are lots of ideas swimming around in our heads and this is one we both agreed on… A hundred year old, former built-in, butler’s pantry. Plan was to paint it white and use it against the brick wall upstairs… However, we have one small (BIG) problem. We can’t seem to figure out how to get it up the stairs and through the door. 😫

I’ve always said “where there is a will, there is a way”!! So, I’m still trying here… any tips??

This is a one-piece unit. Solid oak and very heavy. Original wavy glass and just look at that hardware! 💛

Not giving up yet… As I can see it filled with my ironstone and pottery collection, along with lots of jars of dry pantry goods!

Please let me know if have any great ideas on how to get this up there… 🤗

During this time of closure, I keep trying to look up… Upstairs, that is, where all the work is going on. 🆙

But I must confess, up until this last week, I’ve pretty much stay away. After about 6 weeks or so, I decided it was time to go take a sneak peek… 👀

Not only is all the plumbing being installed but we had a crew come in to put up the ceiling… These were the photos that were taken during the process and for some reason, made me a little nervous… Not sure if it’s the angle or what, but they look so much more amazing in person!! 🖤

The black corrugated metal was Scott’s idea and his inspiration came from Hoosier Routes in Summitville.

It ended up turning out just like we pictured it and we are very happy!

Things are starting to wind down and we should be reopening the shoppe soon… 🏁

As we continue to work upstairs, we will continue to be closed downstairs… Thank you for your understanding and we will let you know just as soon as we can reopen! Until then…

Where does your inspiration come from? Is it from a painting, photos in a magazine or maybe even on instagram? Here at the building and for our project upstairs, we look at history and to the era it was built. We started with a blank canvas in our bath/laundry room…

Recently, I found a period piece in a framed print of two women doing their wash in a stream. I loved the sepia shades and the beautiful old wood frame- it coordinates well with our restored floors! I thought it will work well in the room and I plan to hang it above the laundry closet.

Before we started in this room, I researched Victorian baths to see what we could do to keep with this time period when the building was built… Here are two photos of a bath in the Thomson-Ray house in Gas City… I loved the simplicity and utilitarian look of it. I also love the fact that Scott’s Grandma Gracie worked in this home when she was young… Her Mother and Grandmother were born and raised here in Fairmount. 🤍 These photos were taken by me a few years back and they became my inspiration for our bath here.

So far, we have found our claw foot tub, purchased a gorgeous French-style double porcelain sink and our subway-tiled shower is almost complete! We are getting very close! 🤗

When starting out, it can be hard to visualize the completed project… We have learned to be patient and to take our time waiting to find that perfect piece.

Hopefully soon, we will have a room that we can enjoy for years to come…

Happy Sunny Sunday!

Waaaay back we posted about opening this wall to let more light in to the upstairs from the mezzanine… We also documented when we replaced the old original windows and how we wanted to be able to reuse them within the building… Well, here we are!!

Four original wavy glass windows repurposed in this opening, serves several purposes… First, it lets so much light into the above living area- Second, it creates some privacy, while controlling the noise level from upstairs to downstairs and vice versa- Third, it does my soul good, to save these original architectural items by repurposing them in our new space!

Scott kept the old black paint by sanding them smooth and adding a few coats of poly. A touch of black in our living room! 🖤

The reverse side, he painted white to match the future kitchen on the mezzanine… 🤍

This wall of windows still needs trimming but swipe ⬅️ to see the transformation from where we started.

The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.

I announced a few weeks ago that we were entering a busy season…

It’s been awhile since I’ve updated our progress above in this “upstairs-downstairs” dream of ours- So, here you go.

We have been temporarily closed at Back Home as we start some of the major projects that need to be finished before we move in… We have walls AND we have light! ✨

We can finally see what our new Home will look and feel like… I was worried once the drywall went up, that it would become small and seem dark. It’s quite opposite! The space seems large and notice that ☀️ coming through every window, brightening up every room and making me so happy! ☺️

Check out our stories to get a better idea of the layout… I wonder, in the last 125 years, if anyone else lived up here?

Thank you for being patient while we continue to be closed in the shoppe… I promise to let you know when we are able to re-open! I sure miss seeing everyone. 🧡
