Windows closed, but still smell the smoke?
Canadian wildfire smoke is making its way through the DMV, and for some homeowners, the unusual outdoor odor may be revealing air leaks they didn’t realize were there.
If the smell seems strongest near your closed windows or exterior doors—or you can feel air moving around the frame—aging windows, worn seals, or gaps around the installation may be contributing.
And it’s not just smoke. Those same openings can also allow summer heat, humidity, dust, pollen, and winter drafts to enter your home throughout the year.
Smoke can enter through several areas of a home, so this is not definitive proof that your windows or doors are the only cause. But it may be a good reason to take a closer look.
