There’s a reason American Black Walnut has earned its place as one of the most treasured hardwoods in the country.

For generations, walnut has been used in fine furniture, gunstocks, mantles, cabinetry, tables, and heirloom pieces — not just because it is strong and stable, but because nothing else looks quite like it. That deep, rich, chocolate-brown heartwood has a warmth and character that simply cannot be copied with stain.

But true premium walnut is getting harder to come by.

Black walnut trees do not usually grow in perfect, endless stands like some commercial species. The best logs are often scattered, hidden on farms, ridges, old fence rows, and small private timber tracts. Add in slow growth, limited supply, high demand, careful drying, waste from defects, and the challenge of finding wide boards with clean, dark heartwood, and you begin to understand why walnut carries the price tag it does.

And here’s the part many people do not realize: not all walnut is created equal.

A lot of walnut lumber on the market contains heavy amounts of pale sapwood. While that material may still be usable, it is not the same as the premium “chocolate cake” heartwood most people picture when they dream of a walnut table, mantle, countertop, or custom feature.

Because of our deep relationships with smaller independent loggers and trusted mills, we are able to source walnut with intention — looking for the kind of rich, dark heartwood that turns a project into an heirloom. We are not just trying to sell boards. We are trying to help our customers get the kind of material that makes the finished piece feel worthy of the home it belongs in.

American Black Walnut is not cheap.

But when it is selected well, dried properly, milled with care, and placed in the right project, it is one of the few woods that can honestly be called timeless.

Happy weekend everyone! Hope your day is filled with joy even if your weather is not! We’re thrilled because we got these stair treads finished and they look SO GOOD installed! Solid bayou grown cypress from Louisiana is such a beautiful and unique wood, and the way it takes color when stained is just not replicable with any other timber when it comes to richness and depth.

We got tons of cypress in stock so if you have a project that could use some, give us a holler! We can’t wait to see how YOU will use cypress to its full potential!

One thing we love doing is pushing the boundaries of what's been done and seeing a client's custom dream come to fruition. One of our clients asked us if we could make a set of live edge epoxy river doors. Had some challenges, had to blaze some new trails, but they came out looking pretty cool! Quilted and curled maple burl slabs set in American Black Walnut with black iron hardware.

250 Years.

What a blessing we have to live in these United States. What a blessing that 250 years ago, 56 brave men risked everything, knowing that if they didn't "hang together, they would all assuredly hang separately." What a blessing to live and work in a place where we hold these truth's to be self evident, that ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL.

We've had many changes and dark periods in our history in those 250 years, as we have constantly striven to make good on the promises of the Declaration of Independence. We've gone from walking through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky, to walking on the moon. We've gone from a fledgling country battling pirates off the Barbary Coast, to ending back to back world wars.

We're not a perfect union, but today we celebrate two and a half centuries of trying our best, and enjoying the freedom endowed to us by our Creator.

So on this, our 250th birthday, lets all resolve to continue in the footsteps of Great Men who built a nation from nothing but an idea not for themselves, but for their children. Let us continue in that tradition, trusting in divine providence as our founders did, Lord willing, for the next two hundred and fifty years.

That knowledge, combined with a lifelong appreciation for timber frame construction, historic architecture, handcrafted woodwork, and rustic design, makes Whit a perfect fit for what we do. As Whit puts it, "Many folks today are tired of cookie-cutter suburban stick houses. They want to build something different, something distinctive, and I want to help them achieve that dream."

The 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐝 𝐜𝐲𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 is a member of the Cypress Family (𝘊𝘶𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘢𝘦). It is a long-lived, deciduous conifer native to the southeastern United States, known for its distinctive “knees,” fall foliage, and adaptability to both wet and dry conditions.

𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞:
The bald cypress is deciduous, meaning it sheds its needle-like leaves in the fall; a rarity among conifer species usually classified as “evergreen.” Bald cypresses can grow up to 120 feet tall with trunk diameters ranging from 3 to 6 feet, and they can live for up to 600 years under optimal conditions. Bald Cypress is primarily a denizen of the deep South, but its range follows the Mississippi River drainage north as far as Kentucky and Missouri. The bald cypress swamps and oxbow lakes of the four river counties in Western Kentucky and Tennessee are famous for their abundant fishing opportunities.

𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞:
Bald Cypress wood is valued for its resistance to water and rot and is known in the lumber trade as pecky, or peggy, cypress when it contains small, attractive holes, which are caused by a fungus.
It is classified as a soft wood with a rating of 510 lbs on the Janka hardness scale. Cypress has a beautiful straight, light-yellow grain that works well for tongue and groove, custom molding, mantles, and even timber frame construction.

Happy Memorial Day.

Veterans Day we thank and remember those who have fought and bled for the homeland.

On Memorial Day, we remember those who never made it back home.

We hope everyone enjoys their weekend, we will be closed Monday in honor of Memorial Day. Just remember as you are spending time with your loved ones, enjoying a grill or cook out, and savoring the freedoms afforded you in this great nation, we owe it all to those brave few .
