First in Freedom. First in Flight. And Tomorrow... First in Celebration. 🦅🔥

Before the Declaration of Independence was even signed in Philadelphia, North Carolina was already leading the charge. We are the First in Freedom state for a reason—the fire of liberty was lit right here in our red clay long before the rest of the world caught on.

There is absolutely no better place to celebrate America's 250th birthday than right here at home.

Tomorrow—Saturday, July 4th—we are packing up the booth and heading to the historic grounds of the NC State Capitol in Raleigh for the signature event of the summer: Capitol 250: NC Freedom Fest!

The Midnight Ride That Saved Independence: Caesar Rodney 🌧️🐎

The morning of July 2, 1776, broke grim and deadlocked in Philadelphia.

The Continental Congress was to cast the final vote on independence. The vote had to be unanimous.

But it wasn't.

The Delaware delegation was completely fractured. Thomas McKean was a fierce "Yes." George Read was a stubborn "No." The third delegate, Caesar Rodney, was nowhere to be found. He was home in Dover, Delaware—80 miles away—tending to a severe, painful illness. Without him, Delaware’s vote was a tie, meaning the colony would register as a "No." Independence would fail before it even started.

Realizing the stakes, Thomas McKean secretly dispatched a rider into the night with a desperate message for Rodney: "Get to Philadelphia. Immediately."

When the messenger arrived, Caesar Rodney didn't hesitate. He didn't make excuses about his failing health. He didn't wait for the morning.

He saddled his horse.

Through the pitch-black night of July 1st, a thunderstorm ripped across the mid-Atlantic. The roads turned into treacherous, blinding mires of mud.

For hours, Rodney rode through the driving rain, battling exhaustion and severe physical pain. He swapped horses at relay stations when the beasts gave out, but he kept pressing forward into the dark, driven by a fierce passion for liberty.

On the morning of July 2nd, the delegates in Philadelphia were taking their seats. The mood was heavy. The vote was called.

Just as Delaware was called to answer, the doors to the Pennsylvania State House burst open.

There stood Caesar Rodney: boots-deep in mud, soaked to the bone, completely exhausted, still wearing his riding spurs.

He walked straight onto the Congress floor and delivered the words that changed history:

"I VOTE FOR INDEPENDENCE."

With that single vote, the deadlock broke. Delaware swung to "Yes." Pennsylvania shifted. South Carolina relented. By the end of the day, a unanimous 12-0 vote officially declared the United States to be free and independent.

So today, as you look up at the stars and stripes, remember the midnight ride of Caesar Rodney—and those who gave everything so we could be free.
