Its pretty hard to find a tree without any sort of moss or lichen on it in the PNW, but pollution is causing many lichen species to disappear from the urban areas altogether.
Lichens are especially sensitive to air pollution and fine particulate matter. These more delicate species can now only be found deep in forests, where the air is cleaner and human impact is lower.
What we see on city trees is often just a fraction of what once lived there. Moss and lichen are not just decoration—they’re living indicators of air quality.

But what's that yellow slimy thing?
TheTremella mesenterica goes by many names, witches butter, yellow brain fungus, golden jelly, just to name a few looks exactly as it is described..bright yellow and gelatinous. It is slimy when wet and rigid when dry. They are even edible (being one of the few edible fungi) hence the word "butter" in the name, although it is more rubbery than buttery.

From far away moss may seem like a lump of green grass, you might walk by it and not even consider that there is a whole hidden ecosystem within it. For this tiny little fly, the moss is more like trees providing shelter and water. There are many more microscopic creatures that live in it. Moss to tiny animals is like a coral reef is to underwater life.

Cladonia furcata is a common lichen in my area, I can easily spot it now that it's the wet season and they are bright pastel green in appearance. This lichen is quite a variable species of fruticose (shrub-like) lichen, no two are the same!
