Amy Burnham Ceramics

Amy Burnham Ceramics I make pots mostly for function. Each item is made by hand, with love. I love to use color in surprising ways.

I also participate in wood-firing my pots in East Creek Anagama. This results in unexpected and rich surfaces from the melted ash.

Here’s Atticus exploring some dark horror sculpture, but don’t worry, he’s an actual ray of sunshine irl.

Enjoy the beverage of your choice in any of these three.

My preference? Oh, I’ll take a foamy latte, a perfectly brewed cup of Kona (black), or a doppio… yeah, all the coffee, all the time. I’m a mom and a teacher after all.

One oval vessel with two equally beautiful sides from this last **STELLAR** firing at East Creek Anagama.

It’s been a year of social distancing; I stayed away to protect myself and my family. Everyone still wore masks and stayed physically distanced, but being there in person, working together, not only to make artwork, but also to contribute to something bigger than what you alone can create gave me a sense of relief... and hope.

They look a little pale right now, but I promise, after the alchemy of East Creek Anagama, they are going to be dressed in rich robes of toasty color and melted ash.

This time, I made 3 different sizes... huge 18-oz, medium 12-oz, and espresso 3-oz.

PERFECTLY IMPERFECT
I was on a walk with my son today and we were talking about all the things we would do if we had a billion dollars.... go on a long vacation, buy a house... one for each of our friends and family members, house the house-less, rescue all the animals at the shelter.... it was a fun conversation to have with a 10 year old.

We talked about what we would continue to do and what we would stop doing... I would do ceramics, of course, and he said he would still be educated “so he wouldn’t be one of those dumb, rich jerks”, I told him I would never do laundry or clean my house again because I could hire someone to do it for me. His response to that was so beautiful, he said he would still clean his own house so that he would remember that he was not too good to pick up after himself.

It was a short walk between rain showers, just my son and I, before the short day of winter faded. The snow that fell last week left messy, muddy puddles on the sidewalk and many scattered branches. But as we walked home, we noticed the first signs of spring, crocuses blooming, the first shoots of daffodils, and this branch.... broken from the wind, at first appearing lifeless, but blooming, nonetheless.

STILL HERE
Still over here making.
With the state of the world right now, I’m finding it difficult to concentrate and to create the things I usually love to make.

This last week, my old friend Nils Lou who passed some years ago, had a birthday in heaven. He was one of the original builders of East Creek Anagama where I still fire. He wrote a book called “The Play Book”, where he speaks to importance of tapping into the playful collaboration an artist has with clay. Play has the potential to shift our gears and engage the creative engine of life—to surprise us with unexpected answers to daily problems.

This weekend I took my “play” vitamins and I feel so much better. I haven’t solved the world’s problems, but definitely feel more centered. Thanks for the reminder Nils 💗

I TRIM SLOW
Aren’t those super-speed videos so cool? If you aren’t familiar with the processes of ceramics, you might think that what we potters make comes from the ether. While it is magical to see, trimming this one pot took about 5 minutes.

Some things I’m thinking about while I trim each pot:
1. Even wall thickness from base to rim.
2. Creating a round form on the inside and the outside of the foot ring.
3. Maximizing the area of the pot that can be glazed.
4. Giving the pot “lift”.

FRAMED ART
With all of my shelves, fireplace mantles, tables and countertops decorated with ceramics, it was time to move to the wall.

The wall vase is an idea I’ve been playing around with for a year or so now. Most of the ones I made were woodfired in an Anagama, but because of covid, I haven’t been participating in them to reduce my contact with others.

This one is a colorful version of the same concept.

The ones I love are in my Etsy shop.
