Welcome to my art page! A little about me, my name is Alicia “AJ” Nequatewa, I am Hopi (Honanwungwa) & Diné (Áshįįhíí) from the village of Hotevilla in northern Arizona. Tuve’hongnöm is my Hopi name meaning “Juniper Girl Standing Tall”, I choose this moniker to represent the presence of Indigenous Peoples in today’s world. By utilizing the Hopi language as my brand name I’m requiring non-Natives to acknowledge our existence. Everything I create is deeply tied to a personal philosophy of healing and resilience. As an advocate for mental health in Indigenous communities, I aim to use art as a form of therapy, both for myself and others. Being creative allows me to process experiences with grief, loss, and trauma, while also offering a path for others to connect with their own stories.
I’ve dedicated the work I do to the preservation of Hopi culture while being committed to fostering a broader understanding of Indigenous issues faced by my communities. Through my art, I hope to challenge stereotypes, elevate Indigenous voices, and contribute to the ongoing conversation about justice, healing, and cultural revitalization in our communities.
