We’re carving turnips today . The first traditional ’jack-o-lanterns’. A tradition brought to the south by Irish immigrants who original carved faces in turnips to ward off ā€˜evil spirits’ during the Celtic festival of Samhain. They switched to pumpkins because turnips were not as readily available and discovered that they were actually much easier to carve than turnips.
