š One of our favorite Halloween finds yetā¦
This remarkable survivor was produced by the Knorpp Candy Co. of Brooklyn, New York, and contains nine original figural Marshmallow Pumpkins, complete with their individual compartments and original translucent protective paper.
Research has allowed us to trace this unusual confection remarkably far back. An October 1909 Baltimore Sun advertisement offered āKnorppās Halloweāen Pumpkin Marshmallowsā for 10Ā¢ a box. In 1910, a Montana advertisement described Knorppās Halloween marshmallows as being packaged in boxes decorated with pumpkin faces. The candy was still being advertised in 1912.
Knorpp was an early producer of Halloween novelties and confectionery, later creating its well-known patented Four-in-One Halloween Lantern in 1916.
Based on the surviving period advertisements and the packaging, we believe this box dates to approximately 1909ā1912, likely circa 1910āmaking it an exceptionally early surviving example of American Halloween candy packaging.
Even more remarkable are the contents: all nine original marshmallow pumpkins remain inside after approximately 115 years.
A wonderfully strange little piece of early American Halloween history. š
