This one was tough to post because I genuinely thought the board was finished.

Then I found the cracks.

I could’ve tried to hide them, but that’s not how I want to run my business. My client chose a full remake, and this board is getting a second chance in a different way.

I’m still letting it acclimate and watching the repaired areas before I refinish it. Once I’m confident it’s stable, I’ll finish it out, choose a winner, and do the final reveal.

There’s something about watching a design go from a pile of individual pieces to one complete pattern that never gets old.

For this custom build, I’m combining black walnut with copper epoxy, and this pour is where everything really starts coming together. The copper was my client’s choice, and after seeing it next to the walnut, I think he made a pretty good call.

This one has a long way to go before it’s finished, though. Demolding, flattening, shaping, sanding and finishing are all coming next.

Part 1 ends with the pour. Part 2 is where we find out just how good this combination looks finished.

The redemption build is finally finished.

Part one got way more attention than I expected, so I had a feeling a lot of y’all were waiting to see how this one turned out.

I’m really happy with the way the blue and green epoxy came together, but more than anything, I’m glad I got the chance to take what I learned from the original build and apply it the second time around.

Sometimes the best part of making something isn’t getting it perfect the first time. It’s getting another shot at it.

So now I’ve got to know…

A warped board doesn’t always mean wasted lumber.

Sometimes it just needs a solid reference surface, a few shims, and a little patience.

I really enjoy these kinds of shop fixes because they’re simple, practical, and can save a perfectly good piece of hardwood from ending up in the scrap pile.

Have you ever used a planer sled before? Or do you prefer a router sled, jointer, or another method for flattening boards?

There’s something special about making a piece that already has a meaning behind it before it ever leaves the shop.

This white oak and purple epoxy catch-all tray was made for Dee’s birthday, and I really enjoyed watching the color and grain come together as the build progressed.

The original board may have reached over 700,000 views, but this one is about proving to myself that I can take everything I learned and make it even better.

The blue and green combination was chosen by the client, and I honestly wasn’t sure how the two colors would work together in such a detailed design. After seeing the pour, though, I’m already excited for the reveal.

Now comes the hardest part: leaving it alone long enough to cure.

Well… now you know.

This stack is about to be transformed into a couple of custom commissioned pieces, and I can’t wait to show you the process from rough lumber to finished product.

There’s something satisfying about looking at a pile of rough stock and seeing the finished project before a single cut is made.
