Take a closer look. This is our striped cowhide rug in chocolate brown, shown here at the corner so you can see how the strips come together at a point. Every rug is cut and stitched by hand, so no two turn out exactly alike. Custom sizes available, made to order.

Wool pills. Silk stains. Synthetic sheds microplastic into your home.

Before you pick a rug material, here's an honest look at what wool, silk, synthetic, hand-knotted, flatweave, and natural cowhide actually do underfoot, and which one is right for your space.

Quick correction: it's not 'shou sugi ban,' it's yakisugi.

Turns out the name most people use is a mistranslation.

The technique is Japanese, dating back to the 1700s: cedar charred with fire until it carbonizes, then brushed to reveal the grain underneath.

The char isn't just for looks, it protects the wood from rot, insects, and fire.

Sunlight, sheer curtains, and a rug with more texture than most rooms have personality. 🌿

Quiet luxury done right: natural linen, sculptural ceramics, and a jute rug layered under one of our cowhide rugs for depth underfoot.

What's Beneath You: Ep. 01 You've been calling it herringbone.

It's not.

Chevron = the V-points meet perfectly.
Herringbone = staggered, offset, never closes.

Two completely different patterns with completely different effects on a room.

👁️Chevron moves the eye. It creates direction, pulls you through the space, makes rooms feel longer or wider depending on how you orient it.

While herringbone just sits there.

You've been walking over one of the oldest geometric patterns in human history. Now you know what it's called. And ours, well, they are made to order. Every size, every palette.

Friday feeling = everything. 🌞

To every designer who spent the week measuring, specifying, presenting, revising, and presenting again, you deserve the good drink, the good afternoon, and zero work talk for at least 48 hours.

What are your weekend plans?

Happy Summer Friday from Shine Rugs! 🥂

Episode 01 Tadelakt.

Tadelakt is an ancient Moroccan lime plaster made from limestone, black olive soap, and water. Polished by hand until it becomes naturally waterproof.

No tiles.
No grout.
No sealants.

It's been used in hammams for over a thousand years. And it still looks better than anything you can buy at a tile store.

Also: a tadelakt shower gets more beautiful with age. It develops a leather-like patina. I think that's beautiful.
