The goldenrod got all the attention this month, but look underneath it this week and you will see the purple starting. The asters are opening, and when the asters open, the last diner of the year is turning its sign around.

Asters and goldenrod are the closing kitchen of the nectar season. Nearly everything else in the yard has bloomed, been pollinated, and moved on to seed. What is left flying in September, the migrating monarchs, the late bumblebee queens, the small native bees still provisioning nests, will run almost entirely on those two flowers. A monarch drifting south on a cold morning is navigating diner to diner, and asters are most of the diners.

The clock on this is about six weeks. First frost closes the kitchen for good, and the asters know it. They bloom late on purpose, spending the whole summer building toward the one stretch when they have no competition and every customer left alive.

So if asters volunteer in a bed or along the fence, let them stand through October. Scruffy is the correct look for the last restaurant open. 🌸

Happy September! πŸ‚ September, in Old England, was called Haervest-monath (Harvest Month). This is the time to gather up the rest of the harvest and prepare for the winter months.

In fact, September 29 is Michaelmas, an ancient Celtic β€œQuarter Day” which marked the end of the harvesting season and was steeped in folklore.

Plus, this month we'll witness the Full Harvest Moon on September 26, marking the full Moon closest to the autumn equinox, which falls on September 22 this year. See more holidays, recipes, and reasons to celebrate at Almanac.com/September πŸ‚

Stopped in my tracks by this one. 🧑

This zinnia is doing the most right now β€” layers on layers of coral-orange petals, tucked right in with nasturtiums. This is exactly the kind of bloom that makes u-pick season worth it: the ones you almost don't want to cut because they're just that good in the field.

Zinnias are a great cut-and-come-again variety β€” the more you pick, the more they give you all season long. If you haven't made it out to the u-pick field yet this year, this is your sign.

What color palette are you drawn to β€” warm and fiery like this one, or cool and moody?
