Can we talk about one of the best moments of the holiday season? That first night you flip the switch.

In our house, it was always the youngest kid who got to do it. Everyone bundled up outside, even if it was 60 degrees in Raleigh and nobody actually needed a coat. You count down. You hold your breath. And then, “boom,” the whole roofline lights up and somebody always screams.

We've watched that happen at homes all across Wake Forest, Heritage, and Bedford, and it never gets old. Not once.

Pro tip: “Take a phone video that first night your lights go on.”Don't overthink it. Just hit record. A few years from now, you'll have the best little time capsule without any extra effort,kids' voices, someone's laugh, the glow hitting the yard for the first time.

Happy Neighborhood Spotlight Tuesday, Triangle! 🎄✨

Today we're thinking about Wake Forest, and honestly, it's one of our favorite places to work this time of year. The neighborhoods out there, from Heritage to the streets around downtown Wake Forest, just come alive, in December. You drive through and the whole community feels like it's celebrating together.

We've been fortunate to light up quite a few homes out that way, and every single time we finish a roofline at dusk and watch the lights kick on for the first time, it still gives us that little tingle. You know the feeling.

September might feel early, but this is exactly when the best planning happens, before the holiday rush hits and calendars fill up fast.

Here's something we see every single season, homeowners using regular extension cords for their Christmas lights and wondering why breakers trip or plugs melt.

Quick pro tip: outdoor extension cords are rated differently than indoor ones. For roofline lighting, you want a 14-gauge or 12-gauge outdoor-rated cord. The thicker the cord, the more current it can safely carry without overheating.

We install C9 commercial-grade bulbs on homes throughout Heritage and Bedford, and proper wiring setup is honestly half the job. Beautiful lights mean nothing if your electrical setup is fighting against you all season.

This stuff matters whether you're hiring someone or doing it yourself. Know your cord ratings before you plug anything in. ⚡🏠

Okay, real talk, if you watched “Elf” last December and thought "I want my house to look as ridiculous and magical as Buddy's decorating job"... you're our kind of people. 😄

We actually had a customer in Wake Forest who described their lighting vision to us as "Buddy the Elf energy but make it classy." We pulled it off. It was “spectacular.”

We've been getting the same question a lot lately from folks in Wake Forest and Heritage, Why do some of my lights flicker or go dark partway through the strand?

Here's the honest answer: nine times out of ten, it's one bad bulb pulling down the whole run. With C9 commercial-grade lights, that's a quick swap. With cheaper consumer strands, it can turn into a whole afternoon of frustration on a ladder.

Our pro tip today is a simple one: test every strand on the ground before you hang it. One bad bulb is a lot easier to swap at eye level than on a ladder in December wind.

Takes five extra minutes. Saves you an hour of backtracking.

You know what people don't talk about enough when it comes to holiday lighting? The “before.”

That 20-minute window when the sun goes down and the house is still dark and everyone's kind of holding their breath waiting for that first flip of the switch. 🌙

We were finishing up a roofline install in Hasentree a couple of seasons ago and the whole family came out onto the driveway in the cold just to watch. Nobody asked them to. They just knew.

The dad said, "I've been driving past houses like this for fifteen years. Didn't think it'd ever be ours."

That hit different.

There's something about the roofline especially, when those C9 bulbs trace the edge of a house against a dark sky, the whole home changes. The roofline makes or breaks a home holiday look. Everything else can be perfect, but get that line right and the whole street feels it.

Happy DIY Tips Wednesday, friends! 🎄✨

If you've got railings, a front porch, or steps outside your home, here's one of the best small upgrades you can make before the holidays hit:

Use clear outdoor-rated tape to secure loose cord runs along your railings.It holds better than zip ties in the cold, and it won't damage your paint when you pull it down in January. Zip ties seem like a good idea until the temperature drops, then they get brittle and crack.

Our guys in Heritage and Bedford see this all the time when we're doing pre-season walkthroughs. Such a simple fix that instantly makes everything look more intentional and clean.

Takes maybe 20 minutes. Makes a surprisingly big visual difference.
