Runkel Mfg. (Milwaukee, WI). Pat’d 1903. Brass Adjustable Floor Portable. Runkel Mfg would later become Adjustable Fixture Co (Ajusco) in 1911. Common form. Unique patended tension joints. Scarce manufacturer. Thanks again to for scouring patents and digital archives with me.

There are parents who can afford ‘BATMAN’ products for their kids.

Then there are the parents who can only afford the off brand ‘THAT MAN.’ (See second slide. It’s real.)
I
Then there are parents like mine. If they couldn’t convince us we didn’t need it, they’d make it themselves. Cheers to these types of folks. What they lack in money, they make up for in endless love, affection, and hard work, making sure they can bring joy to their children. Generic, homemade, hand-me-downs from local friends and families, and the occasional charitable food or clothing drive. Growing up in a big poor family was the best thing for my character.

Long couple days. Up into Michigan. Auction. Some shops. Oddly these pieces were found at the end of the trip, just a few miles from where we started. Late night farmhouse digging. I didn’t know Mr. Collins. But my friend did. Heard he was a good guy. Glad he didn’t throw stuff away.

Given the 4th of July holiday, I thought this outfit was a fitting post. I dont buy women’s clothing often but I had to bring this home when I found it in a cedar chest on a nearby farm. Early tag. Early repair. Flocked pattern. Favorite simple color tones. Very patriotic. Very wearable (not by me).

Blue Collar Goods. 1920s. Chore Coat. Superior Brand. Triple-Stitched. Donut Hole Buttons. Single breast pocket. Stifel Indigo. To be honest, not real familiar with JLS material but seems to be, to me at least, an unusual pattern. I think this will hang around awhile.

Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Merry Christmas from the Garard Family. Peace and love to all of you out there this holiday season.

I wasted a lot of time putting this “tree” together but spending time with these drawers was enjoyable. They were pulled from the Freeport Hardware Co right down on main. Lot of great styles and early hand-painted labels. I think this might be a new tradition. Might scale it down though and sell a few off.

Photographing feedsacks isn’t always that easy. Usually it’s standing on my car or leaning off my balcony. Today I had to climb into the rafters of our warehouse to get this flatlay. Whatever it takes I guess.

After a bit of a dryspell I had a flurry of bags come in. The bulk of these came from a stash hidden away in an old Dodge dealership nearby. Never know where you’ll find them. Few graphics and variations in there I hadnt seen before. Good to replenish some stock and hopefully in the coming weeks another wave will hit the Etsy shop.

Ive given rides to drifters and stranded people for years. It’s something I’ve enjoyed and gives me a chance to connect with strangers. This past week was fairly strange as I had numerous run ins with homeless people, lost people, and people tripping on drugs. It’s sad to see those on that spectrum of life and how they ended up where they did.
I
Ronald Reagan said the best social work is a job. Agree or not, I fully believe we are designed to work and it’s the best thing we can be doing for ourselves. Life is different for everyone but it’s sad to see what idle hands can lead to. It’s a beautiful thing to be productive and prosper for yourself, your family, and your community. I know I need to be working and thankfully I absolutely love what I do.
I
These past couple weeks have been busy and I’ve been able to find a decent selection of items. Some private, some markets, some sales. The stuff is still out there, and as most of you know, just takes some work to find it.

Illinois’ state tree is the Mighty White Oak. Is that why I naturally gravitate towards buying oak furniture? Probably not. I do know that I am partial to it because of its resounding character and strength. It’s tight grain only found in large mature trees and pieces like this. It wasn’t intentional to buy so much oak recently but it worked out to make this silly photo look decent.
I
Index filers. Postal desk. Stools. Brass floor lamps. Seamless sacks. Barrister cabinet. Wood crates. And then there is that tailors mirror. Sucks to move but it’s worth the effort. These will slowly make their way to Etsy over the coming weeks or DM for pricing.

I watch a lot of fellow dealers on social media hustle coast to coast getting product and there’s a lot of respect for that. As a husband, father of three, and a former trucker, the bulk of my road days are behind me and I am quite content with that. I’m a Midwest kid who loves his community and doesn’t mind staying put.
I
I let myself believe I may not find the good stuff like other dealers but I’d find enough still to feed my family and pay the bills. Then I stumble across a small town estate nearby and after a multitude of truck loads, the rabbit hole continues. It was a blessing to my family and myself to have a chance to buy this stuff. Long time collector and hoarder. She had good taste.
I
I’ll drive residential streets daily and wonder what’s in every attic, basement, and garage. Every home has something. A lot gets tossed. Some of it gets found. The stuff is out there. Sometimes in your backyard.
