I enjoyed spending the day with the interior design committee at Felician, Ana, Methodist Church, and making some great decisions as we move toward the conclusion of their project.

The last 2 weeks of my life disappeared into one thing… architectural specifications for Feliciana Methodist Church.

Most people think architecture is just drawing floor plans and making pretty renderings. But behind every building is a mountain of tiny decisions that nobody notices… until they’re wrong.

For the past couple weeks I’ve been researching and documenting:
• trim profiles
• door types and hardware
• paint finishes and colors
• tile patterns and grout joints
• flooring transitions
• toilet paper holders
• light fixtures
• ceiling details
• wall finishes
• accessibility clearances
• and about 10,000 other details that quietly shape how a building feels.

At some point I finally understood why specification books take so long… because when I finished, it was over 300 pages. 📚

And honestly? I learned something important through the process:
The little details REALLY matter.

The difference between an average building and a thoughtful building is usually not one giant flashy feature. It’s hundreds of small intentional decisions layered together over time.

Most people walking into the church will never consciously think about the trim transition, the paint sheen, or the flooring edge detail… but they will feel the difference when everything works together.

Good architecture is often invisible.
It quietly helps people feel welcomed, comfortable, peaceful, inspired, and cared for.

So if you’ve wondered where I’ve been lately… apparently I’ve been spending my days thinking deeply about toilet paper holders and grout joints for the glory of God.

Working on options for the front of a client's house. Which one do you like better?
Option 1: Keeps the original brick and adds limestone to the front gables.
Option 2: Paints everything a cream color giving it that modern look.

Most homes today are built to last 20–30 years… then come the problems.

I’m working with a client whose home isn’t even 30 years old—and it has to be torn down.

So we’re designing something different: a home built to last generations—with a durable structure, accessible systems, and designed for the Houston climate.

Because a home should outlive us, not expire.

Today is San Jacinto Day.

The San Jacinto Monument wasn’t supposed to be taller than the Washington Monument… so Texas added a star on top and made it taller anyway.

That’s what I love about design—
it’s not just about meeting requirements, it’s about seeing the opportunity to go further.

At WD Architects, we build monuments to remember the moments that matter.

Great to spend time with the wonderful team at Church Of The City. They setup and tear down in an Episcopal Cathedral every week creating a beautiful tension of powerful worship inside transendent architecture.
