Kakejiku (Hanging Scroll) by Sessō (雪窓)
Undated, possibly late Shōwa Period, c. 1970s

Traditional Japanese ink painting depicting a matoi (纏), a ceremonial firefighting standard accompanied by two cylindrical lanterns (matoi-jōchin). The lanterns bear stylized inscriptions meaning “ascend the summit.”

During the Edo period (1603–1868), matoi identified firefighting brigades and marked their defensive positions, while lanterns served as identifying markers during nighttime operations. The decorative arrangement suggests a possible ceremonial or commemorative tribute to a local fire brigade in Yamagata where this was made.

Signed “Sessō” (雪窓) with the artist's seal. Mounted in blue cloud patterned textile. Includes fitted wooden storage box and protective paper wrapping.

Days of Olde Antique Center accepts walk-in sellers on Tuesdays after 11AM. Quality antiques, vintage merchandise, artwork, furniture, decorative objects, collectibles, and other unique items are welcome for evaluation and possible purchase.

Kitaguni Antiques & Vintage is available from approximately 2–3PM (by appointment, please e-mail us at [email protected]) and considers Japanese domestic-market art and antiques, studio pottery, rare vintage and retro toys, gaming items, and select collectibles. Export-market and souvenir wares are generally not considered.

Thursday seller hours are paused for the remainder of the season until further notice. We recommend calling the main line before visiting to confirm availability. Thank you!

Japan, Late Edo Period, c. 1864 (Bunkyū 4 / Genji 1)

A pair of woodblock-illustrated books (gōkan), featuring ukiyo-e covers attributed to Utagawa Kunisada I, original patterned paper covers, traditional bindings, and delicate washi paper pages.

Originally published in 1864 by publishing house Wakabayashidō, these volumes represent the flourishing popular literature and print culture of Japan during the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Tsukigata Nahiko (1923 – 2006)
Oni-Shino Guinomi Sake Cup
Japan, Showa Period, c. 1970s – 1980s

Japanese ceramic artist Tsukigata Nahiko developed a deeply personal artistic philosophy shaped by reflections on life, mortality, and the transformative power of fire. In 1961, he developed his signature Oni-Shino style, a radical reinterpretation of traditional Shino pottery. Through prolonged wood firing, sometimes lasting up to 20 days, he created extraordinary surfaces evoking the ferocity of volcanic landscapes, bubbling geothermal springs, and the raw, elemental beauty of the natural world.

Featured here is a small Oni-Shino guinomi (sake cup), bearing the artist's impressed signature and accompanied by its original inscribed wooden presentation box (tomobako), cloth, and original studio documentation.

REMINDER TO SELLERS

Days of Olde Antique Center welcomes walk-in sellers, collectors, and individuals from estates and personal collections seeking to place quality antique and vintage items Tuesdays and Thursdays between 11AM – 3PM. Please call the general number for more info.

The center considers quality antiques and classic vintage items, artwork, furniture, décor, glassware, militaria, breweriana, physical media (vinyl, CDs, etc.), electronics, artisan-made decorative objects, collectibles, and unique items from nearly every category. Please, no big-box or contemporary home-goods décor.

Kitaguni (B-280) maintains a more focused buying profile, with preference for Japanese antiques and vintage items, ceramics, folk craft, rare and high-end electronics, retro video gaming, designer and archival fashion (Y. Yamamoto, Miyake, Kawakubo, et al), graphic books and documents, import physical media, and select contemporary collectibles. Export-market material is considered selectively, and we generally avoid common mass-produced souvenir wares.

Please keep in mind that Kitaguni’s preferences do not represent the entire center. Each dealer at Days of Olde is unique and has their own specialties and areas of interest, and may be more open to items that are not a fit for Kitaguni.

This week in October 1982, the compact disc made its commercial debut in Japan, ushering in a new era of digital music. 💿

Jointly developed by Sony Japan and Philips, Sony launched the CDP-101, the world’s first commercial CD player, alongside 50 titles from CBS/Sony Records.

More than four decades later, CDs are making a comeback, especially among younger collectors. CD sales in the U.S. rose 16% in the first half of 2026, fueled by collectible editions, imports, anime and K-pop releases, and growing pushback against digital products that are purchased but never truly owned.

Browse through our extensive library of physical media at Days of Olde, including Japan-only hi-fi formats like the SHM-CD, hi-res multichannel SA-CD (B-280), Germany and Japan pressings and other imports throughout the center, the new Rick’s Records (B-255) revamped booth dedicated to physical media and instruments, and a Japanese edition of The Beatles Collection, the complete 13-album box set (B-148) among many others.

Days of Olde Antique Center is open daily from 10AM to 6PM.

Our audio selection has expanded with pre-owned CDs, Japan-exclusive SHM-CD and MD releases, all complete with archival BOPP sleeves, obi, and original inserts.

New arrivals today include new and old titles by Lana Del Rey, Iron Maiden, Mary J. Blige, Taylor Swift, SWV, Eminem, 2Pac, Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Franz Ferdinand, Nirvana, Alanis Morissette, Madonna, Elvis Pressley, Justin Bieber, Paul McCartney, Doja Cat, Queen (all Japan tuned 24-bit remasters), Charlie Puth, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, to name a few, with more being added regularly. We also have robust micro-bookshelf systems from Yamaha, Panasonic and Denon, only the best for enjoying physical media.

You may also notice that many booths throughout Days of Olde have been thoughtfully refreshed by our Saturday crew. Several displays that had become difficult to browse have been reorganized with stronger thematic focus and improved layouts, making them easier to navigate while showcasing each dealer's collection more effectively.

Shigeyoshi Hisada (1946 – 2001)
Guinomi Sake Cup
Aichi, Showa-Heisei Period, c. 1980s–1990s

A stoneware guinomi by Shigeyoshi Hisada, its cylindrical form drawn inward along one side to create a distinctly organic profile, with a cobalt line encircling the interior.

Hisada worked in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, and was particularly known for his exploration of iron and tenmoku glazes. His work is well represented in Japan and in international museum collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which holds his 1994 stoneware bowl "Kaze" (Wind), among others.

A few new seasonal additions to the booth this weekend, including glazed and unglazed ceramics, antique and vintage hanging scrolls, lacquerware trays, and kiriko (hand-cut glass) pieces.

As the season progresses, more pieces will be making their way onto the main table and into our display cases.

We’re located just minutes outside of Atlantic City at Days of Olde Antique Center, one of the area’s largest antique and vintage malls, with 21,000 square feet and more than 65 dealers offering unique finds, collectibles, and more.

We wish centenarians all across the world continued health, happiness, and dignity as we approach September 21 (敬老の日, Keirō-no Hi), or Elders’ Day.

Japan’s health ministry released data on Tuesday showing that there are now 107,677 people who are at least 100 years old, an increase of nearly 8,000 since last year. Women make up the vast majority of the group, at 88%. https://nyti.ms/46zrunR
