Bronze Vase by Nakao Sōho
Meiji–Taishō Period, c. 1900–1925

A compact but exceptionally heavy cast-bronze vase decorated in high relief with birds on flowering branches, sculptural elephant-mask handles, and a lotus-form pedestal base.

Signed 宗甫 (Sōho) to the base and attributed to Japanese metalworker Nakao Sōho [中尾宗甫] (attr.).

Dimensions: 4 × 4 × 5.25 in., approx. 5.5 lbs

Large Imari Sometsuke Charger by Tōko of Ōtani-an
Blue & white porcelain, Meiji Period, c. 1890

Monumental Japanese charger likely made in Arita, painted in underglaze cobalt with the celebrated Classical Chinese poem "Ode to the Red Cliff." The composition depicts the Song-dynasty poet Su Dongpo and his companions traveling by boat through a moonlit river landscape beneath the Big Dipper, surrounded by passages from his 1082 prose-poem. Further calligraphy, the maker’s inscription, and five original firing-spur marks appear on the reverse. Inscribed 大谷庵 藤古製 (Ōtani-an, Tōko-sei)

Exceptional collector-grade condition, with no cracks, hairlines, or repairs. Remarkably round and true, without the warping often encountered in chargers of this scale.

REMINDER TO SELLERS

Days of Olde Antique Center accepts walk-in sellers on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 11AM - 3PM. The center considers quality antiques, vintage merchandise, artwork, furniture, decorative objects, collectibles, and unique items from nearly every category.

If you would like to meet specifically with Kitaguni (B-280), appointments are available on Tuesdays (or Fridays) after 1PM with advance notice.

Kitaguni's primary purchasing focus is antiques and vintage, art, ceramics, folk craft, and collectibles originally produced for the Japanese domestic market. Export-market material is considered selectively, with preference given to finely crafted or historically significant examples such as Kutani or Imari kinrande. We generally do not purchase mass-produced export ceramics including common Nippon-marked wares, later commercial Satsuma, or souvenir wares.

Please contact us in advance to confirm availability and arrange an appointment. If you come in with your lot during the busy weekend, we will not be able to provide assistance and be asked to return the following week. Thank you!

Booth 252 90% off sale has ended. This week, the booth will be converted into a new vinyl and physical media center due to popular demand.

Booth 272 is holding a 50% off sale (shown) and features breweriana, sports and tailgating collectibles, PS4 & 5 sports games, vintage cameras, select vinyl, and optical equipment. Also available here is an exceptionally clean Danish Modern credenza with matching hutch at a remarkable price.

Books, media, gaming, stationery, apparel and footwear, are all marked 15% off today (Monday) through Wednesday in our booth only, B-280. This includes Japan domestic and US version consoles, cartridges, CDs, comics, manga, and magazines. All discounts are already reflected on the price tags in the booths; no additional discount will be taken at the register.

Chawan by Shigeyoshi Hisada
Oil-spot tenmoku (yūteki tenmoku) stoneware tea bowl, c. 1990s

Hisada (1946–2001) was a noted Tokoname ceramic artist best known for his experimental tenmoku glazes, particularly oil-spot. His works were exhibited extensively through the Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition, with significant examples exhibited at the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka in 2020 and The Met in NYC in 2021.

Several works by Hisada have already found new homes, and we're pleased to offer two new oil-spot works: a guinomi and chawan, on display this weekend at Kitaguni.

With original signed and sealed tomobako (wooden cord-bound storage box).

Nearly 100 previously undocumented Nintendo cartridges dating to 1993 have surfaced in a Wisconsin game shop, a remarkable discovery in the material history of Japanese video gaming.

With an exceptionally rare Super Mario Bros. cartridge selling for $3M at Heritage Auctions in Texas last month, it will be interesting to see what these newly discovered examples bring at auction.

Have something unusual tucked away? We’re always interested in less-common Japan-market consoles, games, and hardware that never made it to the U.S., from the Panasonic Q and Nintendo 64DD to other curiosities of gaming history. Please show and tell or bring it in when I'm on the floor.

A Wisconsin game shop discovered almost 100 copies of a never-before-seen version of Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt cartridges in storage.

The remaining inventory has now been consolidated into Booth 252, with many pieces already finding new homes. Browse a wide selection of crystal, Depression glass, porcelain, vintage books and media, paintings, antique chairs, figurines and sculptures, curios, cabinets, lamps, and many other unique antiques, vintage items, and collectibles. Highlights include elegant European Rococo porcelain lace figurines, porcelain relief wall plaques, Christian iconography, and other decorative ceramic works.
