Post Piano Project

Post Piano Project Artworks, Installation/Instruments, & Compositions by Kehren Barbour and Michael Luchtan

Art objects in this series are made from materials culled from deconstructed, decommissioned American made pianos. Art pieces are inspired by creation of sound and shared experiences of the engagement of music. Its my hope as artist that pieces in this series are mediations on craft and creative arts. Interested in an art piece you've seen online or at a a retailer, please send a note to Kehren an

d she'll help facilitate the procurement of the art pieces. Each pieace is hand-crafted and acts as memento on mediatation on craft of careful listening.

We miss you! We are working on updating this page and catching up on details related to the workshop.... we have been navigating a challenging chapter from this side of the Atlantic...first it was an international move, then a pandemic...and then, maybe you knew an uninsured driver crushed our art piece that lined the windy ridge at the workshop at the Gerton workshop. We are relieved and grateful to report there were no fatalities or injuries... but ...what a mess...what a noise...and what a head and heartache. Good news is that with the help of our neighbors in the Fairview, Gerton, Lake Lure, and Asheville community we have been able to tidy the mess made by that speeding driver...and we've started to emotionally recover from the destruction of an art piece that resulted from a decade of collaboration. We'll share more here soon -- our pals The Fairview Town Crier have been writing an article to share this storied chapter in more detail. ... ...

Hola, todos! I'm making some changes to this page. the was a dream come true -- it was a 5 yr long project that made art in form of installation pieces and object d'art from 41pianos. Those 13 tons of art build a community -- we are so grateful for the interest ans support that each of you played* (*intentional pun, ) in making this project a success in a concept, aesthetic, environmental, and ethical level. On every level, we couldn't have made that much art with out our community of supporters. As an artist with a Master's Degree in Sustainable Development and a background in professional theater, I was looking for an elegant way to discuss climate and waste systems and engage folks in the beautiful possibilities of looking at material band resources differently. As the project has come to a close, I'm working on 2 new ideas -- both are related to cultural studies in Barcelona. As some of you know, we moved from Asheville to Barcelona in September and after making a safe and successful landing, I'm starting to get my mind wrapped around upcoming studies and projects. One is dedicated to the "Dones de Gracia" -- a group of women healers working with herbal traditions and social practices that has roots that run as deep as the time of the Romans and the other is about cultural artifacts in the rapidly changing landscape of Barcelona. I'll share more about the Donas and Rare Goods shortly. We love and miss you all and are looking forward to sharing the next steps of these two culturally rooted projects. signed with love, KB

Hey there folks -- it's been a long time since I've posted any updated information to this page. The certainly had a good run of it and with our upcoming studies abroad, it has drawn to a natural closing point. It was a beloved chapter and a community supported project that started as a question about where such a beautiful instrument went at the end of their original use. We, with your support, were able to come up with a cool answers to that question. We made over 13 tons of art from 41 pianos over 5 years time. Pretty incredible, really... The last pieces of the series had been in storage at my workshop and today I brought them to my booth at Asheville's Screen Door. It's time to bring project to a close but it was such an enjoyable, inspired, and inspiring project. It's a bittersweet feeling for sure, but one I'll always look back on with such fondness and as a treasured memory. If you are interested in one of the remaining pieces, please let me know sooner vs later and I can send you details. Screen Door is located at 115 Fairview Rd in Asheville, NC.

In the meantime, I've renamed this page and will add updates related to the Post Piano Project...probably over the next few hours. Thanks for your support. I can hardly believe that its been three-year-long project and we've made as much as art we have.
