Did you know?

Father’s Day was birthed because of a Civil War Veteran.

Sonora Smart Dodd, raised by her father—William Jackson Smart, a widowed veteran who single-handedly raised six children—campaigned for the holiday, leading to the first celebration in Spokane, Washington, in 1910.

Happy Father’s Day from our family to yours!

In Honor of Flag Day

The attack on Fort Sumter in April 1861 became one of the first great flag stories of the war. Major Robert Anderson’s garrison defended the U.S. flag against Confederate bombardment, and when the fort was evacuated, the flag became a cherished national relic.

Throughout the North, public displays of the Stars and Stripes exploded in popularity, with flags appearing on homes, businesses, political rallies, and military camps.

President Abraham Lincoln understood the flag’s importance as a symbol of national unity.

During the war, the United States continued to add stars for new states despite the rebellion, reinforcing the idea that the Union was perpetual and indivisible.
