It costs less than almost anything else on a furniture floor, and it's the one thing that changes a room the fastest.

Lighting. Flat, cold overhead light is the default, but layered lighting is what makes a home feel more expensive.

Add a real floor lamp or table lamp with some warmth to it, and the whole room shifts.

A room can look overdone and still feel unfinished if the wrong five things are hanging around.

→ too many small decorative pieces with no clear focal point
→ hardware and light fixtures mixing three or more metal finishes
→ a rug too small for the furniture sitting on top of it
→ a sofa or chair that's out of scale for the space
→ a bare wall that never got real art or a mirror

Pull those out, or swap the ones that need swapping for the right scale, and the room does most of the rest on its own.

The swaps are the easy part once you know what to look for, like a well-scaled rug or a mirror big enough to actually anchor a wall. That's the kind of thing we keep on the floor at Upscale Consignment.

Somebody get this vanity a spot in a Parisian apartment on a prestige TV show.

White and gold finish, curved legs, and an arched mirror with a French script motif that looks lifted straight off a perfume bottle.

The matching stool keeps the same cream, black, and gold energy going for actual sit-down glam sessions.

The settee has main character energy of its own: same script motif, an arched back with a carved floral detail, and one black accent pillow pulling the whole look together.

The chair you'll "swap out eventually." The side table that was only supposed to last a few months, two years ago.

Your brain keeps score of every room that still feels unfinished, even after you've stopped consciously noticing it.

A mirror is one of the easiest ways to change how a room feels, but only if you think past just picking one you like.

A few things that actually make a difference when it comes to styling a mirror:

Lean it instead of hanging it, especially something oversized in an entry or bedroom. It looks intentional instead of half-finished.

• Face it toward a window when you can. That's what actually pulls more light into a room, not just where it happens to fit.

• Let the frame contrast what's around it. Ornate gold in a room full of clean lines, a plain wood frame somewhere already busy.

• Match the size to what's underneath it. Too narrow over a console and it floats, wide enough and the whole vignette holds together.
