I don’t know who decided that a grown-up house required grown-up behavior, but we respectfully disagree. Especially when said house is sitting on Lake Michigan.

These clients have grown children and wanted their Winnetka home to be the place everyone genuinely wanted to come back to. So yes, there are beautiful rooms and a very beautiful lake outside the windows. There’s also a pool table, dart board, wet bar and a neon sign declaring Rosé All Day downstairs.

We kept the references to the lake on the right side of nautical, then made sure nothing felt so precious that the family had to behave differently around it. Refined enough to be their primary home, relaxed enough to remember it’s a lake house.

There are worse things to bring home from Colorado than the feeling of a mountain house. For these clients, who had fallen in love with the mood of their Telluride home, the question was how to bring some of that back to Glencoe without making Illinois pretend to be Colorado.

We went darker and earthier than we often do here, letting stone, wood and some very good, weighty textiles do a lot of the work. The result has the grounded feeling they loved out west, but belongs completely to this house and the way they live in it.

It also happens to look particularly good in October.

The Ben bench is meant to change a little once it’s yours. The oil-and-wax tanned leather softens and deepens with use, getting better with the years.

One of a handful of silhouettes ANDREA GOLDMAN designed with Justin Nelson, built in their studio in Bend, Oregon. We like it at the foot of a bed, in an entry, or pulled up to a table.

Well-Chosen. Available through the link in our bio.

The best collaborations start before anything is built. Working with an architect from the beginning means figuring out the whole house together. Questioning things. Changing our minds. Going back to the drawings. And occasionally admitting someone else had the better idea. The houses are always better for it.

For World Architecture Day, we’re stepping outside to celebrate a few of our projects, and the architects we’ve had the pleasure of figuring them out with.

We could have introduced Onnie a million different ways, but piling a car full of boxes and driving them from Wisconsin to Chicago somehow felt the most like us.

The road trip was a nod to where I came from, where I ended up, and all the places, people, and things that have shaped my eye somewhere in between.

Now that Onnie is officially out in the world, I hope you have as much fun discovering it as I’ve had getting here.

When we started designing this home, the family wanted a place where everyone could kick off their shoes and stay awhile. Nothing too precious, plenty of room for several generations to be together, and an easy flow between inside and out.

25 Beautiful Homes Magazine took a tour of our Sawyer project, getting into the thinking behind the home, from the no-TV living space to the colors, materials and little details that make it ready for a houseful.

Thank you Vivienne Ayers for such a lovely feature.

September is when we start pretending summer is over while continuing to eat breakfast with the doors wide open. At this Glencoe home, we wanted the breakfast room and kitchen to make that kind of denial very easy.

The round table sits right between the kitchen and pool, so it works for coffee in the morning, lunch straight out of the water, and dinner when nobody feels like going back inside yet. The kitchen is deliberately straightforward and hardworking, with plenty of storage and enough room for a family of six to actually use it at the same time.

A room can look completely different without anyone calling a contractor. Sometimes the best refresh is simply paying attention to what’s already there and switching up the pieces that are easiest to change.

For this Winnetka home, new pillows, textiles, art and accessories gave familiar rooms a different energy without undoing what already worked. A little more contrast here, a different pattern there, a few objects moved around or swapped out entirely.

We’re big believers in knowing when a room needs rethinking and when it just needs a very good edit. The latter can go a surprisingly long way.

Well, this is a very fun sentence to finally write. Onnie is officially open.

Until now, so much of Onnie has existed behind the scenes, in conversations, samples, boxes, and a website we’ve looked at approximately four thousand times. Today, you get to see the whole thing.

Chapter 1 is now live. Some pieces began with something we came across. Others started much closer to home, as an idea in the studio or a conversation with a maker.

The idea was for Onnie to feel like a well-vetted eye you could borrow. A place to come when you’re looking for that final layer, or when you weren’t really looking for anything at all and something catches you.

So, come have a look around. We hope you find something you want to live with for a very long time.

Chapter 1 is waiting for you at onnie.com
