Good fires start with properly seasoned wood.

Freshly cut or damp firewood contains too much moisture to burn efficiently. Instead of producing a hot, clean fire, it creates more smoke and cooler flue temperatures. That combination can contribute to creosote buildup inside the chimney.

A moisture meter is the easiest way to check your wood. Split a piece and test the freshly exposed center. A reading below approximately 20% is generally the goal.

Dry wood burns better, produces more usable heat, and is easier on your chimney system.

If smoke rolls back into the room when you light a fire, your chimney may be struggling to establish a proper draft.

Sometimes the cause is a cold flue that hasn’t begun pulling warm air upward. Other possibilities include a blocked flue, creosote buildup, a restricted damper, or negative pressure created by exhaust fans and tightly sealed windows.

Opening a nearby window may help temporarily, but it doesn’t explain why the problem is happening.

Have you noticed white, chalky stains on your chimney?

That staining is called efflorescence. It appears when moisture travels through brick or masonry and leaves mineral deposits behind as it evaporates.

Cleaning the surface may remove the white residue, but the more important question is: Where is the water coming from?

A damaged crown, deteriorated mortar, flashing issues, or another opening may be allowing moisture into the chimney. Catching the source early may help prevent more extensive deterioration.

What does a chimney liner actually do?

The liner creates a protective passage inside the chimney that carries smoke, heat, and combustion gases out of the home. It also helps protect the surrounding masonry and nearby combustible materials from high temperatures and corrosive byproducts.

A damaged liner may have cracks, gaps, missing mortar joints, or deteriorated sections that aren’t visible from the fireplace. These openings can allow heat or combustion gases to reach areas where they don’t belong.

That’s why the condition of the liner is an important part of a chimney inspection. The fireplace may appear to work normally while damage is developing inside the flue.

This stucco chimney was showing several signs that it needed attention, including surface cracking, discoloration, and heavy water staining.

Those marks aren’t always just cosmetic. Cracks and deteriorated stucco can allow moisture to reach the materials underneath. Over time, repeated water exposure can lead to further deterioration, especially as temperatures change and trapped moisture expands and contracts.

Our team repaired the damaged areas and resurfaced the chimney to restore a more uniform, protective exterior.

Two custom hip-and-ridge caps, fabricated to fit and installed!

Unlike a standard flue cap, a full-coverage hip-and-ridge cap protects the entire chimney crown. Its sloped design helps direct rainwater away from the top of the chimney, while the screened sides allow smoke and combustion gases to exit and help keep animals and debris out.

Why does a custom fit matter? Every chimney has different dimensions, flue locations, and venting needs. A properly measured and fabricated cap provides the right coverage without interfering with the chimney’s ability to vent.

These two new caps add lasting protection and a clean, finished look to the home.
