RARE challenge coin commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the 4th Fighter Wing. The front of this 2" x 1¾" coin is the specially-designed 75th Anniversary Wing emblem. It shows the several aircraft flown by the Wing, the spanning years, and the famous flaming arrow and Wing motto. The reverse gives the date of the 75th Anniversary Gala (for which the coin was minted) and lists ALL the aircraft flown by the Wing: Spitfire Mark VB, P-47 Thunderbolt, P-51 Mustang, F-80 Shooting Star, F-86 Sabre, F-100 Super Sabre, F-105 Thunderchief, F-4 Phantom II, and F-15E Strike Eagle. This is a MUST HAVE for the challenge coin collector as well as for 4th Fighter Wing veterans and fans!

The 4th Fighter Wing heritage originated in 1940 with the American volunteers who formed the Royal Air Force Eagle Squadrons. Their Spitfires took to the skies through the dedication of the maintainers whose descendants today sustain four squadrons of multi-role F-15E Strike Eagles as members of the 4th Maintenance Group. The Eagle Squadrons became the 4th Fighter Group and by the end of World War II had destroyed 1,016 German planes - thus began the legend of “Fourth But First.” Maintainers, like the famous nose artist and crew chief, SSgt Don Allen, kept Spitfires, P-47 Thunderbolts, and P-51 Mustangs flying despite countless missions. Korean War maintainers suffered freezing cold to ensure their F-86 Sabres were fully mission capable, enabling aircrews to destroy more MiGs than the rest of the Air Force combined. In Vietnam 4th Tactical Fighter Wing maintainers labored to keep their F-105s and F-4 Phantoms in the fight. Through Operations DESERT STORM, IRAQI FREEDOM, and ENDURING FREEDOM the men and women of the 4th Maintenance Group continue to generate, launch, recover, and regenerate aircraft 24/7, 365, anytime, anywhere in the world. “Fourth But First” is not just a slogan – it’s a way of life.

This is the new Ronald Wong painting that the former (as of yesterday) 4th Maintenance Group commander Colonel Tom Eisenhauer commissioned. It features the F-15E Strike Eagle that the 4th Fighter Wing currently flies, with the Spitfire that the RAF Eagle Squadrons flew in WWII reflected in the tarmac. We are finalizing the text, patches, etc., for the prints, which should go to press within the next couple of weeks. We are really excited about this print that honors our maintainers.
