Some much truth in this article
Is beef expensive? Or are we disconnected from what it takes to produce it?
7 to 10 dollars a pound of hamburger feels fair to me. But I'm the producer. I see the 18 months to 2 years that it takes to grow a calf to butcher weight. We feed them daily, check on them daily, ensure they are not sick daily and make sure they have what they need to thrive daily. We see the medication costs and vet bills if they do happen to get sick or injured. We see the vaccine and parasite protocol med cost that is required to keep them healthy. We see the fuel cost, equipement repair costs, water costs, seed cost, fertilizer costs, harvesting cost, transportation costs, butchering cost....the list can be endless.
As a producer, I see what is put into raising cattle. Our inputs are high. Just as high as what our customers see and sometimes higher. Some people complain about fill a car with fuel and right now we wished we where just filling up a car. But to raise cattle we can't cut corners for a life is on the line. So is feeding our communities.
Beef is one of the most nutritionally dense foods you can buy. It can be a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals and protein. I personally want to spend money where I know a get my biggest bang for my buck and quality beef can provide that.
So again can I ask.....is beef expensive? Or are we shooting our producers and eventually ourselves in the foot by choosing cheap foods over quality foods.
Would love to hear your thoughts.
