New floors always start with picking the right wood for how a family actually lives, and hickory is one of our favorites for that reason. This 5 inch hickory floor went down with a neutral Duraseal stain and three coats of satin finish in the traffic areas, enough durability for everyday life without losing the natural color variation hickory is known for.

Wrapping up September with one of our favorite kinds of projects: bringing a natural oak floor back to life. Refinishing can completely change the feel of a room without the cost or mess of a full replacement. If you have hardwood floors in your Nashville, Brentwood, or Franklin area home that could use some attention, we'd be glad to take a look.

Every plank of oak has its own grain pattern, and up close you can really see the knots, swirls, and natural variation that make hardwood floors one of a kind. No two rooms ever look exactly the same, even with the same species and stain. It's one of the reasons hardwood ages so much better than most flooring alternatives.

Kitchens are hard on flooring. Spills, dropped dishes, chair legs scraping across the surface, it all adds up. Light oak like this holds up well in high traffic areas like kitchens because scratches and small imperfections tend to blend into the grain instead of standing out. It's a practical choice that still looks great.

Staircases are one of the trickier parts of a hardwood project. Every step has to be measured and cut individually, and the transitions need to line up cleanly with the flooring on each level. When it's done right, the stairs and floors flow together like one continuous piece instead of looking like two separate projects.

Dark hardwood floors look incredible, but they do show dust, pet hair, and footprints faster than lighter finishes. A few things that help: sweep or vacuum every couple of days, use furniture pads under anything heavy, and stick to a cleaner made for hardwood instead of an all purpose spray. Small habits go a long way in keeping dark floors looking sharp.

Some homeowners want their hardwood floors to look brand new. Others want them to look like they've been there for a hundred years. This distressed, rustic finish is for the second group. The hand scraped texture and worn character give a room a lot of warmth, and it hides everyday wear better than a smooth, glossy finish.

White oak keeps showing up as one of the top requests we get for new hardwood installs. It takes stain evenly, has a tighter grain than red oak, and works with almost any design style from farmhouse to modern. If you're planning a flooring project and can't decide on a species, white oak is a safe and popular choice.

Herringbone floors take more time, more precise cuts, and a lot more patience than a standard plank install, but the end result speaks for itself. Definitely one of our favorite patterns to install.

Not every scratched or dull floor needs to be replaced. A lot of the damage we see, deep scratches, worn finish, water spots, can actually be fixed through sanding and refinishing instead of a full tear out. It's worth getting a floor evaluated before assuming the worst. If your hardwood in the Nashville area is looking rough, give us a call and we'll take a look.
