From this morning's sawdust to SUNSHINE! ☀️

One hour of cutting + an afternoon of painting and look! 4 big sunflowers ready to bloom into birdhouses!

These will be my $140 XL sunflower houses — the big beauties with the 3D flowers and tin roofs!

Today I started my experiment... im using a lot of Western Red Cedar in building my birdhouses which I do not paint but put painted art on it. I know at some point the cedar will turn grey but the artwork colors will stay vibrant for many many years. If you have seen my work, I spray a clear coat on the fronts to preserve the colors longer than just the outdoor paint can. So today ive sprayed 3 different products on a piece of scrap cedar with each product written on the back of corresponding pieces. Lets see how long these clear coats can hold up to days, months, of 100+ degree weather and sun. Texas is a harsh climate, we need to know how to maintain our birdhouses and other outdoor art.
Should we make a game of this? Maybe a 50.00 gift certificate towards a birdhouse??? Any guesses how long it will take for these treated pieces of scrap will take to turn grey? I have a 4th piece added that is NOT treated for a bottom line comparison.
