Day 41 of the 75 hard! Currently halfway through this book and I realized I should share! I know a lot of people get their teen girls onto the birth control pill to help regulate periods and help with cramps and things like that, not necessarily JUST for birth control. But I think this is a necessary read before you make that decision. This book wasn’t written to convince you not to take the pill, but rather to inform you of the research known and not yet known about what the pill is doing to your body so you can make a better, more informed decision. MY BIGGEST TAKE AWAY so far is that, while there isn’t a lot of research yet into why, pill taking women’s bodies don’t produce and can’t react to the release of cortisol in response to stress like naturally cycling women (and men) do. The research so far suggests that the pill puts our bodies into a state of chronic stress which after a while shuts down the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) from too much stress, even after they go off the pill. Chronic stress can cause memory impairment (possibly contributing to Alzheimer’s), anxiety, depression, insomnia, weight gain, diabetes, etc. While too much cortisol too often can be bad, it also helps with memory, it helps your brain save those core memories, so a lack of it will cause you not to remember things as well.
