Some people look for a beautiful place, others make a place beautiful.

Custom to the core. Meet The Heirloom Cottage.

What began with major water damage became a complete reimagining of this lakeside home. A warm, French-inspired retreat designed for all four seasons and life with a family of eight.

I led every step, from general contracting and coordinating the trades to interior design and final styling.

Custom cabinetry I designed around this family’s life. A Roman clay hood. Carefully selected stone, reeded glass, and statement lighting. Even bar stools made specifically for this space.

My client’s trust gave me the freedom to bring our vision fully to life. The result is a home that feels deeply personal, functions beautifully, and has character built to last.

Huge credit to Disaster Response by Ryan for the water damage cleanup and introducing me to this wonderful client.

And to The Mitten Tog for capturing the warmth, texture, and soul of this home so beautifully. Our first shoot together, and I’m already excited for the next.

This is your first look. There’s so much more to share.

Planning your own transformation? Let’s talk. From construction to the finishing touches, Knox J Design brings it all together.

For an upcoming photo shoot of one of my design projects, I wanted an outfit that felt as considered as the space itself.

It’s a kitchen remodel I designed, and I wanted what I wore to feel like it belonged in the photographs. Deb, the owner of James Boutique, understood exactly what I was going for and personally helped me pull this look together today. It was so much fun bringing her eye for fashion into a space I designed.

We’ve known each other since before we both made our way here, so getting to support each other’s businesses makes this especially sweet.

She dressed the designer; I’ll show you the kitchen soon. 🤍

Sometimes the most meaningful pieces in a home aren’t the ones that cost the most.

This glass box isn’t just décor. Inside are some of my favorite flowers from my mom’s funeral. One of my childhood best friends, along with her mom, carefully freeze dried them and then handcrafted this beautiful glass keepsake so I could have a piece of my mom with me forever.

Today I stopped by Stoffer Home’s warehouse sale and found these sculptural candle holders. I brought them home, styled them next to this box, and everything just clicked.

Moments like this remind me that great design isn’t about filling a home with expensive things. It’s about surrounding yourself with pieces that tell your story. Mixing sentimental keepsakes with beautiful new finds creates a home that feels collected, personal, and completely your own.

As an interior designer, those are always my favorite spaces because they don’t just look beautiful. They mean something. 🤍

This was the first kitchen renovation I completed after starting Knox J Design, over five years ago.

My clients had one dream: a walk-in butler’s pantry.

The problem was, they didn’t have the space… or so they thought.

Then I noticed something no one had considered. On the other side of the kitchen wall was an oversized garage storage closet. With some creative problem-solving, we were able to reclaim that space, completely rework the layout, and give them the walk-in butler’s pantry they had wanted for years, without adding onto the house.

The best design isn’t just about choosing beautiful finishes. It’s about solving problems in ways people never imagined were possible.

That’s still my favorite part of what I do. Looking at a home differently and helping clients see possibilities they never knew were there.

One of my favorite commercial projects to date. 🌿

We transformed this Grand Haven restaurant with custom wall paneling, wallpaper, custom tabletops, a new bar, and carefully selected finishes throughout. Seeing it filled with great food, live music, and happy people never gets old.

If you’re in Grand Haven this summer, do yourself a favor and stop by . And if you’re dreaming up a commercial renovation, let’s talk.

Sometimes the perfect bar stool doesn’t exist… so we build it.

These stools were custom designed specifically for this kitchen.

✔️ Benjamin Moore Smoke Blue finish.
✔️ Solid walnut tops and footrests.
✔️ Built to the exact height and proportions for this island.
✔️ Crafted to perfectly complement the custom walnut details throughout the space.

This is one of my favorite parts of designing kitchens.

When every element is designed together—from the cabinetry and layout to the lighting, hardware, countertops, furniture, and even the bar stools—you end up with a kitchen that feels intentional instead of pieced together.

That level of customization is what transforms a beautiful kitchen into one that feels truly one of a kind.

If you can dream it, chances are we can design and build it.

Custom cabinetry.
Custom furniture.
Custom islands.
Built-ins.
Tables.
Benches.
Bar stools.
And just about anything else your space needs.

Because sometimes the perfect piece isn’t sitting in a showroom.

Sometimes it needs to be created.

✨ If you’re planning a kitchen renovation, let’s design something that couldn’t exist anywhere else.

One of my favorite parts of designing a truly custom kitchen is getting to take it one step further.

These walnut bar stools were designed specifically for this lake house and built from the exact same walnut as the cabinetry. We carried the arch detail from the coffee bar into the stools and repeated the signature button detail from the custom hood so every element feels connected.

It’s the kind of craftsmanship that’s only possible when every piece is designed together from the beginning.

If you’re investing in a custom kitchen, why stop at the cabinetry?

At Knox J Design, we can design custom furniture, bar stools, dining tables, benches, and more so your home feels completely one of a kind.

One of my favorite niches in the design and build industry is custom cabinetry.

Why? Because the possibilities are endless.

I don’t design around trends. Cabinetry is one of the biggest investments you’ll make in your home, and my goal is to create something that feels just as beautiful 20 years from now as it does today.

This walnut vanity is a perfect example. Slab-front walnut cabinetry, a matching walnut countertop with an integrated sink, and a custom sculpted shadow reveal create a piece that feels more like furniture than cabinetry.

The best compliment I can receive is hearing, “I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

If you’re looking for truly custom cabinetry that’s designed specifically for your home and your lifestyle, I’d love to help bring your vision to life.

One of my favorite parts of what I do is seeing potential where most people see something that needs to be replaced.

Swipe to see the before. ➡️

This custom rift white oak railing was designed specifically for this home and built from scratch by my cabinet maker. Every detail was intentional, from the proportions and spacing to the custom stain that ties seamlessly into the white oak flooring throughout the house.

What I love most is that it functions as more than a railing. It became a focal point, a feature wall, and one of the first things you see when you walk through the front door.

This project is especially meaningful because it’s my own home. The house has an incredible mid-century character that feels more like a California mountain retreat than a typical Michigan home, and preserving that personality while elevating it was the goal from day one.

Design is only part of what we do. We help clients bring ideas to life through custom cabinetry, architectural millwork, renovations, and thoughtful design-build solutions that are created specifically for their homes.

Sometimes the best projects aren’t about adding more. They’re about seeing what’s possible.

Selections for a medical training facility currently in progress.

Every material in a commercial space has to connect cohesively. Flooring, carpet, cabinetry, tile, paint, wallcoverings, and texture all play a role in how the space ultimately feels.

The goal for this project was to create something clean, elevated, professional, and calming for the doctors and surgeons using the space daily.

A big part of my job is taking all of these individual selections and turning them into a clear direction before construction even begins.
