What happens when you invite more people into the process of designing standards?

In 2025, CIDA hosted a series of community sessions to gather input from across the interior design field.

Educators. Practitioners. Program leaders.

Each brought a different perspective on what works—and what doesn’t—when it comes to design education.

One thing became clear:

There is no single “right” way to deliver a program.

So standards need to be flexible enough to work across different contexts, while still maintaining clarity and consistency. That’s why this phase focused on co-creation—listening, learning, and refining ideas together.

What did we miss—what perspective is most important when designing standards?

For many designers, the studio is where professional identity begins to take shape.

But what if the future studio becomes something more?

CIDA's foresight research envisions studios as collaborative learning ecosystems where technical, social, environmental, and ethical challenges come together. Students learn not only how to create solutions, but how to navigate complexity, engage communities, and think systemically.

Future studios may look less like production spaces and more like innovation labs. Spaces where experimentation, reflection, and interdisciplinary collaboration are essential parts of learning.

So here's the question: what experience from studio had the greatest impact on your growth as a designer?

Interior design today looks very different than it did even a decade ago.

Designers are increasingly working in:
• healthcare
• education
• large-scale commercial environments
• multidisciplinary teams

That means graduates need more than creativity alone. They need:
✔ communication skills
✔ technical knowledge
✔ strategic thinking
✔ adaptability

CIDA accreditation helps programs align education with these evolving expectations. Because preparing students for the future workforce starts in the classroom.

What skills do you think future designers need most?

What if professional education wasn't a straight line?

CIDA's foresight research points toward a future where learning is continuous, adaptive, and connected across multiple environments. Rather than relying solely on traditional educational models, future designers may learn through industry partnerships, interdisciplinary collaborations, immersive technologies, community engagement, and lifelong professional development.

This shift isn't about changing what we value. It's about expanding how learning happens.

So here's the question: If you could redesign design education from scratch, what's the first thing you'd change?

For decades, professional education followed a familiar path:

Learn. Graduate. Work.

But what happens when knowledge changes faster than careers?

CIDA's foresight research suggests future learning models will become increasingly flexible, modular, and connected across sectors. Universities, industry partners, community organizations, and digital learning environments may all play a role in preparing future designers.

The future isn't about replacing higher education. It's about expanding where and how learning happens. So here's the question:

What's the most valuable lesson you've learned outside a formal educational setting?

Before students enter the profession, they enter the classroom.

And what happens there matters more than we think.

CIDA accreditation helps ensure that programs are:
✔ Structured
✔ Relevant
✔ Connected to real-world practice

Because better education leads to better outcomes.

When standards don’t work as expected, the issue isn’t always the content—it’s often the structure behind them.

In 2024, CIDA created a Task Force to take a closer look at how its Professional Standards are organized and applied.
The goal wasn’t just to improve what the standards say—but how they function in real-world settings.

What we learned:
- Some areas created confusion instead of clarity
- Different programs interpreted criteria in different ways
- Rigid structures didn’t always reflect diverse educational approaches
- So instead of making small adjustments, we asked a bigger question:

How can standards be designed to be both clear and adaptable?

This work is helping shape a framework that better supports educators, reviewers, and students.

What would you advise—should standards be more structured or more flexible? Learn more about the upcoming 2028 standards here - https://loom.ly/a76PWkE
