⚡ Monthly Outlaw Electrical Tip #2 ⚡

Not all fire extinguishers are safe to use on an electrical fires. 🧯 Knowing what to use and how to use it can mean life or death in some cases.

Water-based extinguishers can conduct electricity, increasing the risk of electric shock and causing the fire to grow. That's why electrical fires require a Class C-rated extinguisher. Many common household extinguishers are ABC-rated, which will work on most of the common household fires, including electrical.

🤠 Outlaw Tip:
If it's SAFE to do so, shut off the power to the affected circuit before attempting to extinguish an electrical fire. If the fire is spreading or you can't safely disconnect the power, get everyone out, call 911, and let the professionals handle it.

I was out on a job site this week searching for the infamous Panel Gremlins when Taylor taught me something I didn't know...

Copper and aluminum wiring don't always play nicely together. 🫢😅

When they're connected incorrectly (the photo below, for example), the two metals expand and contract at different rates. Over time, that can lead to loose connections, excess heat, and potentially even a fire hazard. 🧯

The good news?

It doesn't automatically mean your home needs a complete rewire. There are safe, code-approved ways to correct the issue and keep your electrical system running safely.
