One part spiritual, two parts gangster.

This past weekend we hosted a weaving workshop The Church with Marfa Stance as part of Marfa Stance and Friends. We had the best time making baskets with everyone!

We join more friends this Wednesday with a small collection of finished handmade carriers at Marfa Stance’s annual private Sag Harbor shopping event. RSVP for the details, we are only there on Wednesday 3-6 and baskets are first come!

We think our little Montauk fishing shack was built long before the town paperwork from 1947. Recently, my husband made my weave dreams come true by constructing an extension of the Shaker peg trim to the ceiling for our baskets.

Pieces we use daily—for garden harvests, beach runs, or storing fruits and vegetables on the counter. It’s a work in progress, but I think it’s so fun.

Owning the absurdity of the idiom Underwater Basket Weaving has always been a conscious rebellion against the idea that handwork is frivolous (in education and otherwise). Indeed, it is quite the opposite; for me, it feels quite essential. Our name also implies that we are teachers at the core, and while we have expanded beyond that, I believe in the transference of knowledge

As the community of people interested in basketry grows, I know it’s an odd feeling for longtime weavers who feel their secret language will enter the mainstream. The beauty of going with the flow will be that the basket embodies energy that we can use to cultivate kindness in our culture. It can still be a sacred private practice.

A look back at our August Morning Basket workshop in Maine this past weekend! There is nothing quite like the feeling of being a part of these days with everyone.

So grateful to have shared our space with Trinity Mouzon and her sweet family, alongside our dear partners in friendship, The Post Supply and The Forager Project.

We wove, we laughed (a workshop is never complete without a cameo from dad) and we shared a proper summer feast—traditional crab rolls, chunky local salads, Maine blueberries, and Forager Project yogurt. Guests left with their finished baskets and a copy of Trinity’s book Eating at Home in hand.
