The challenge of our was to open a very formal space into a modern mountain light filled home with views in every direction. This took a good amount of structural engineering because the house is perched on a mountain top. High gusts of winds and rugged terrain made the project challenging but nothing is impossible when you bring in steel support wrapped in reclaimed oak to pretty it up. How’d we do?

Being an interior designer often feels like walking a tight rope, slow and steady, one foot in front of the other. Making sure your client, your contractor and subs and your designs are all merging in a way that works for everyone. Over the years I have learned some important lessons about running a design business. I’ve listed a few of the most important ones below that have guided me over the years.

1. Trust is the most important factor in a successful project. Some clients come into a process giving you their full trust and others take months or years to gain their trust. If you don’t really have the full trust of a client then things get fragmented and often the design can be pulled apart.

2. You have to know when to push a client and when to back off. A good designer is not there to just execute the clients wishes. I have had times in which I have really had to push a client and times I have known I just need to pull back and do as they have asked. This comes with experience and an understanding of what people ultimately value. I had a client once that just could not see how expanding her kitchen made any sense. I pushed her to trust me and when it was done she cried at how well the house flowed with guests and family and how she never knew things could be that way.

3. A house has an opinion of its own. There are not just two parties involved in how a house wants to be laid out, but three. A client may have a viewpoint and the designer another but the house itself wants certain things and its our job to respect that as well. Houses are often jammed with their energy in certain areas and are over utilized in some areas and under utilized in others. When you open spaces and balance the use the house breaths in a new way. You can feel that as you walk through a home. At the end there is a sense of peace.

We’ve tackled the Ultimate Second Home Wish List in our latest renovation and checked every box

A second home has a pretty tall order to fill.

It needs to function as well as your primary home—with all the storage, organization, laundry, entertaining space, guest accommodations and everyday conveniences that make life easier.

But it also needs to be way more fun. Way more relaxed. And a whole lot more memorable.

The ultimate second home wish list might look something like this: a kitchen that can handle a crowd, spaces for everyone to spread out, plenty of places to gather, a cozy spot for a rainy afternoon, room for all the gear, a great outdoor living space, a pool or lake or mountain just outside the door and little luxuries that make you feel like you’re actually on vacation.

Because the best second homes aren’t just smaller versions of your primary home.

They’re designed around how you want to live when you’re there. More entertaining. More lingering. More outdoor time. More family and friends. More games, cocktails, fires, swims, naps and long dinners.

Function meets fun and that is a tall order.

But when a second home gets that balance right, it becomes the place everyone wants to escape to.

The previous owner of our Copake Barn project was an art collector and wanted as much wall space as possible in their converted barn. When we took on the renovation, we knew there was no way that this wall could not be opened up. The result was even more dramatic than we realized. The renovation took place during the height of Covid and windows were 40 weeks out. We bought these simple storefront windows and put them across the whole front of the barn to get this effect and never looked back:)
