Warning! Using tap water in a diffusing humidifier can plug up a furnace filter and as little as a week. Minerals like calcium, magnesium and lime are diffused into the air in very small particles of "white dust". This can be harmful to your heating system, and can cause respiratory issues. It is suggested if you are going to use a diffusing humidifier to use distilled water. The other option would be an evaporative humidifier. An evaporative humidifier leaves all the minerals behind so they do not become airborne.

Ice melting off the roof, dripping onto a heat pump can cause the fan blade to go out of balance and damage the heat pump. If your heat pump starts shaking badly because of it, turn it to emergency heat and allow ice to thaw off of the blade.
