It’s been a full and wonderful event week for us. We were delighted to spend the evening with the ladies of creating floral bouquets together in such a joyful and inspiring setting. Their excitement, creativity, and enthusiasm made the night feel especially beautiful, and watching each woman leave with her own custom design was the sweetest ending to the evening.

About last night...
We enjoyed hosting the UJA-JCC for an evening in full bloom, flower arranging class. Our shop turned into a flower-filled girls' night out. A long stretch of table, a bounty of blooms, many hands, the volume of laughter filled the room. There's something so special about watching each person bring their own style to the table, learn something new and walk away with a beautiful floral design that is completely her own. Thank You UJA-JCC for spending the evening with us.

One of our favorite flower stories had nothing to do with an anniversary, birthday, or holiday. A gentleman came in to buy flowers, and when we asked if it was for an anniversary, he said, “No, she’s just having a bad day.” That stayed with us.

Sometimes the most meaningful flowers are the ones given for no big occasion at all. Just love, thoughtfulness, and the simple desire to brighten someone’s day. “I thought of you today” may be one of the most beautiful reasons to send flowers.

WHERE WINTER ENDS & SPRING BEGINS

Helleborus × hybridus, a member of the ancient Ranunculaceae family, is one of the most remarkable cold-season perennials you can grow. It blooms boldly through the winter months, and come spring, once the threat of frost has passed and the soil is workable, you can plant new varieties directly into your garden, where they will thrive and return faithfully for years to come.

We have carried the Hellebore here in Greenwich for years, and it never gets old. There is something about watching a plant bloom in the dead of winter, in shades of dusty plum, blush, and ivory, while everything else has gone dormant, that stops people in their tracks every single time. We also use Hellebore in our floral arrangements, and they make a frequent appearance on our flower bar. They add such whimsy to any arrangement. Customers love them.

BRING ONE HOME TODAY. They won't be here much longer this season.

PLANTING YOUR HELLEBORE FOR SUCCESS

Light: Dappled shade to part sun. Tuck them beneath deciduous trees, along a north-facing border, or in the shadow of established shrubs. Direct afternoon sun is the one thing they won't tolerate.

Soil: Rich and well-draining, amended with compost at planting. Think woodland floor: layered, loose, and full of life.

Planting Depth: Set the crown at or just below soil level, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart. They spread on their own terms, slowly and beautifully.

Water: Keep them consistently moist through the first growing season. After that, they largely take care of themselves.

Hardy. Deer-resistant. Long-lived. This is the plant that comes back year after year without being asked.

For 114 years, McArdle's has known what grows in Greenwich. Trust us on this one. You'll be glad you made room in your garden for this beauty.

After a long, snowy winter, it finally feels like spring again at McArdle’s Floral & Garden Design. Our greenhouse is now filled with early-season color, including beautiful hydrangea plants and vibrant ranunculus.
These are some of our favorite “cheater plants” for early spring containers. If your outdoor planters are still looking a little winter-weary, simply drop a hydrangea or ranunculus into a container or container insert for instant color and spring vibes.
Pro tip from our growers: These plants can brighten your porch, patio, or entryway right now—as long as they can come indoors at night when temperatures approach freezing.
