Alone in Croatia’s Velebit mountains, a hiker’s night took a dangerous turn after a serious fall left him unable to move as temperatures dropped and snow began to cover the terrain. With darkness closing in, North the Alaskan Malamute relied on instinct, laying his full body on top of his injured owner to help preserve warmth. North remained there for thirteen hours without leaving, enduring the freezing conditions until search and rescue teams reached them and found the dog still firmly pressed against the stretcher, a living shield credited with helping turn a near tragedy into survival.
