This design reveal from early 2024 is still one of my favorites to date.

My clients already had a beautiful home, but it no longer felt like them or worked for the way they lived. And as you can see, they are two of the dearest, most vibrant people, so we wanted their home to reflect that.

We transformed rooms they rarely used into functional, inviting spaces that they ended up truly enjoying and spending time in. Because no one wants to spend time in a room that doesn’t meet their needs or feel like a place they want to be.

Whenever a client tells me, “We never spend time in this room,” I have the same thought every time:

I realize I’m about to sound a little curmudgeonly and may offend while doing so, but I’ve been thinking about this for a while and the goings on of IG/fb lately has got me feeling this way. I don’t like all the unnecessary extraness (probably not a word but I’m making it one) that is required or expected. Here are the things that probably irk me the most:

* The “kinda chic” movement. You know what I think is kinda chic? Photos without words on top of them.

* Posts/reels where they try to entice you with a video, but then tell you to go to the comments to find out whatever it is. I didn’t come here to read. I came here to look at photos and legit reels.

* Lip syncing and dancing posts. Most people can’t even lip sync the clip or song they’re using. There needs to be more practice and talent. If you’re going to make me watch you lip sync, at least know the words.

* All. The. Suggested. Posts. I’ve got a really novel idea: how about I just get to see the posts of people I follow and actually do want to see, hmmm IG?

I can’t be alone on this, right? What are your IG/fb pet peeves?

Hi, I’m Summer, owner and principal designer of Inside the Design. If you’re new here, I thought I’d introduce myself by sharing a little about how I approach designing a home.

• I believe good design starts with listening. Your home should feel like you, not like a showroom or someone else’s idea of what it should be.

• I believe quality matters. Beautiful stone, real wood, well-made furnishings, thoughtful craftsmanship. The things worth investing in are the things that stand the test of time.

• I believe lighting can completely change a room. Natural light, lamps, sconces, decorative fixtures. And yes, the overhead light can still be there for moral support. 😉

• I believe the smallest details often have the biggest impact. The trim profile, the scale of the hardware, where a tile line ends. Those quiet decisions are what make a room feel considered.

• And I believe a beautiful home should still feel welcoming. It should invite you to sit down, settle in, and stay awhile.

Ultimately, good design isn’t just about how your home looks. It’s about how it feels to live there.
