I have been selling my work to the Manzanar Historic Site for many years and recently received this wonderful email which I would like to share with people.
Hi Miya!
I am a huge fan of your beautiful origami work. I was just at the Manzanar Historic site this past weekend and purchased 4 of your crane mobiles from their gift shop.. I'm giving these all as Christmas gifts to my family this year.
Thank you so much! Please know, your origami art really brings me great joy and I know it will to my family too.
With a grateful heart,
Michelle (Muto) Warth
ps ~ I was visiting Manzanar this past weekend because my great-grandfather (Kiichuro Muto) and grandfather (Tak Muto) both helped create Merritt Park there at Manzanar, during their incarceration, and my family was given a very special tour by the National Park Rangers and Chief Archeologist of the grounds and the restoration project they are doing right now to bring back the gardens, built by not only my family members and other incarcerated Japanese Americans too, they are trying to restore the gardens to life again for the general public to see. It was quite a moving, emotional experience. I was able to also see the barrack sites where my family lived and a stone pond and stone statue my great-grandfather created in front of his barrack. All of the people who work at the Manzanar site are so very warm and knowledgeable and generous, they made us feel so cared for during our visit. And I'm just grateful that people like this are caring for such a significant place and ensuring generations to come can learn from the tragic mistake made so long ago, so hopefully the same mistake never repeats itself again. I don't have my grandparents here anymore, they passed away in 2001 and 2013, but I know they'd be very glad that people are visiting Manzanar and coming away from it with a much deeper understanding of what happened. And your gifts in their gift shop are a very beautiful addition and bring peace and joy, which is really needed at such a heavy, emotional place. So thank you for giving something uplifting and cheerful for us to pass onto others and keep as a reminder of the delicate nature of life
