One of my favorite moments in card making is the comparison.

You finish the simple version, and it's lovely. Then you finish the WOW version — same card, more layers — and you hold them both up together and think: Oh. That's what a few extra steps can do.

It's not magic. It's just technique, applied one layer at a time.

That's what I love about teaching card design. It's not about talent. It's about understanding what's happening and why — and then being able to do it again on purpose.

Here's the one question I want you to ask yourself every time you sit down to make a card:

"Where's my cluster?"

A cluster is just a grouping of your focal elements — leaves, flowers, die cuts — in one area rather than spread evenly across the card. When you do that, your eye knows exactly where to look. And when your eye knows where to look, your card feels balanced.

Every card from Sunday's Simply Leaves class uses this. The hello card, the thinking of you card, the thanks card — all different placements, all the same principle.

It's one of those things that's simple to understand and immediately makes your cards look more intentional. 🍂

Here's a little heat embossing trick I share in this week's video that makes the whole process go faster:

Warm up the back of your paper with the heat gun for a few seconds before you start.

It preheats the surface just enough that when you move to the front, the embossing powder melts faster and more evenly. Less time holding the heat gun over one spot. Less chance of over-heating.

That gold shimmer you see on this card? All heat embossed — Versamark ink + Gold WOW embossing powder — and the result is stunning. 💛
