This has broken our hearts. GeeGee was one-of-a-kind, and a friend to my mom as well as to me. Hug your family tightly every chance you get.

We are very sorry to say that Gee Gee Rosell, the beloved founder and owner of Buxton Village Books, has passed away. Gee Gee was a warm and caring friend to all readers, authors, publishers, vacationers, visitors, and others, always ready to stop and chat. To say she will be missed grossly understates it.
In the days ahead, we will share information as it becomes available. In the meantime, please share any of your memories and thoughts here.

We are sorry to say we'll be closed today. We are safe, and healthy, but the sound tide is rising steadily and high tide is at 1:30. Just a normal fall nor'easter, but we are staying off the roads and out of the way of crews trying to keep the roads open. Enjoy your monday!

We are closed today for Dr.

Latest info on the road. We are all safe and fine, but Hwy 12 still needs some love. I’ve heard the roads will NOT open tomorrow.

Good news! Reinforcements have arrived from Tyrrell, Hyde and Currituck counties to help us with the recovery process on NC 12. We are very grateful for their help!

At this point, we'd like to answer the dozens of questions we're receiving about a timeline to reopen the highway. The answer is, we don't have one yet. Before we can schedule a reopening, three things need to happen:

1. Hurricane Erin needs to STOP sending us her ocean overwash. The coastal flood advisory ends at 1 a.m. tomorrow, so we're hopeful that the tides will be kinder to us going forward.

2. We need to repair the dune breaches and clear the highway of standing water and sand, and then check to make sure there is no pavement damage (so far, we have no indications of any pavement damage).

3) Assuming no pavement damage, we clear the road as best we can so it is safe to travel and then reopen it. If there is pavement damage, that will be a longer process.

We understand that Saturday is 'turnaround day' on the Outer Banks. We understand how badly you want to get here. Trust us, no one wants to see this highway reopened more than we do.

When we have a timeline on reopening, we will say so here. We will issue a press release. We'd shout it from the mountaintops if there were any mountains around here to shout it from.

But safety is Job One, and we won't be reopening Highway 12 until it is safe to do so.

We will post more information here when it becomes available.

I've been talking to people about this all day...and here we go! Hopefully it will be much ado for nothing, but it is imperative to be prepared.

Hurricane Erin is forecast to bring life-threatening impacts to Dare County, including coastal flooding and impassable portions of NC Highway 12.

A State of Emergency has been declared for all areas of Dare County.

A Mandatory Evacuation has been issued for Hatteras Island (Zone A). Zone A includes all of Hatteras Island, including the unincorporated villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras.
Learn more: DareNC.gov/HurricaneErin

Now is the time to secure property, finalize plans and evacuate with belongings. Please follow instructions from officials and property managers.

It’s a moody and rainy Memorial Day. Fitting for the somberness of this day of reflection and paying respect for those who have given their lives for our country.

As far as a beach day goes, it looks like a washout - literally. But every day is good for something. If you’re vacationing on Hatteras Island, it’s a good day for a little shopping between the rain bands, for reading books and visiting with family, and low-key activities like puzzles and crafts. Come see us for craft supplies, craft kits, puzzles and more.
