The school year is ending but the learning doesn’t stop! This summer is a great time to be mindful that handwriting is more complex than it seems. It’s not just about forming letters; it’s a “whole body” activity that relies on so many skills! From maintaining upright posture and a strong core to ensuring shoulder and wrist stability and hand strength, it all plays a part.

Don’t forget the cognitive side of things, like attention, visual skills, and the ability to recall and properly form letters. As you begin to plan for next year, remember to support your student’s entire learning system.

Go to www.missjaimeOT.com to learn more about handwriting! I have a handwriting email series, blog posts, and products!

Big movements come first! This is because strong core and upper body muscles are the building blocks for good hand control. Before a child can use their hands well (fine motor skills), they need to develop:

Postural control: This means being able to hold their body steady in different positions, like sitting upright.
Forearm rotation: This allows them to turn their hands over for tasks like grasping a cup.
Strength and stability: This applies to the shoulders, elbows, and wrists for controlled hand movement.
Thumb separation: This lets them use their thumb and fingers independently for more precise tasks.

These skills develop in a specific order, with gross motor skills like rolling and standing coming first. Playground activities like climbing and swinging help build this foundation for future fine motor skills like writing. The weather is nicer so go outside and play on the playground, the perfect place to developing those gross motor skills.

When a kid’s art project looks a little messy, it’s actually a masterpiece in the making! 🎨 From an occupational therapy (OT) perspective, the real value of art projects isn’t the perfect final product, but the process itself.

As kids scribble, paint, and glue, they’re building crucial skills like:

✍️ Fine motor control: Gripping a paintbrush or crayon, manipulating small pieces of paper, and squeezing a glue bottle all strengthen the tiny muscles in their hands and fingers.

✌️ Bilateral coordination: Using both hands together (one to hold the paper, the other to draw) is a foundational skill for tasks like getting dressed and using utensils.

🤏 Sensory processing: Getting their hands sticky with glue or feeling the texture of different materials helps kids learn to process and respond to new sensory input.

So next time your child brings home a masterpiece that’s more about the journey than the destination, remember that the mess is where the magic happens!

If you want your school team to respect your clinical expertise next school year, you have to change how you show up on Day One.

Every September, we promise ourselves we’re going to better educate our teachers on what OT actually is. But then the back-to-school chaos hits, the paperwork piles up, and staff training falls to the bottom of the list.

The secret to a confident, respected September? Prepping in June. ☀️📚

Giving yourself the summer to review your materials means you aren't scrambling in August. You can walk into your building on the first day of school, hand your principal a completed staff presentation proposal, and completely set the tone for the year.
To make it incredibly easy, I've done the heavy lifting for you.

"Unlocking Learning Potential: Transformative Visual Perception Strategies for Classroom Success" is a completely done-for-you presentation packet designed specifically for school-based practitioners to present to teachers and school staff.
It includes ready-to-use PowerPoint slides, an in-depth presenter guide with your exact scripts, and actionable handouts for teachers. It bridges the gap between your clinical knowledge and professional delivery, showing staff exactly how visual processing impacts reading, writing, and focus.

Do your future, busy September self a huge favor. Grab it now, review it at your own pace over the summer, and start the new school year with unmatched confidence.

Let's reframe that right now: You can make a massive difference inside the classroom, too! 🎒👇

Too often, we get comfortable in our therapy rooms because the classroom feels intimidating. We worry about stepping on the teacher's toes, getting in the way of a lesson, or losing our clinical identity in a sea of twenty-something kids. So, we stick to pull-out.

But when we limit ourselves to the therapy room, we miss out on a massive opportunity to support our students—and their teachers—where it matters most: in their natural educational environment.

That is exactly why I’m so excited for the Inclusive Classrooms Summit (June 8–10). It’s designed specifically to give you the practical, real-world tools to master classroom collaboration.
