Was able to take a beekeeping class on fall and winter hive management with Dan Conlon from Warm Color Apiary in Deerfield today. Full of information and overall great guy. I’ve gotten a few nucs and a few queens from him and all have been performing great. Thanks again Dan for sharing years of experience and knowledge. Anyone looking to get into beekeeping should look him up.

Today on my way home from Medford ma for a class I remembered that Maxant Industries was on the way home. I figured I’d pop in and see what they had and I was met by a salesman (wish I could remember his name) he was super nice, had a lot of recommendations I feel were in my best interest, not selling me the highest price equipment, but what I really needed. After he asked if I wanted a tour of the fab shop where all the honey equipment was made. I got to see how the honey extracted were made from stainless sheet metal to finished product. It was a last minute decision so I didn’t get anything but a t shirt but when I’m ready for a honey extractor I’m going back and getting their 9 frame (medium super) honey extractor. I highly recommend stoping in and say hi if your ever near Devens, Ma

Maxant Industries produces high quality Honey Processing Equipment from Extacting to Bottling using 100% American stainless steel.

Did you know when bees make wax it’s not yellow? It’s actually white. It turns yellow from walking on it with the yellow pollen on their hind legs. Eventually after walking on it so much it will eventually get dark and turn black.

I went back into the nuks and tried to cut out a couple of queen cells to make a few more splits however when I cut them out I mostly tore the cells open because they were to close to the plastic foundation to be able to pull them out. I tossed the cells back on top of the frames so the bees can reclaim some of the royal jelly however they re attached one of the cells. Curious if it hatches. I’ll check back in a few days and have a look. While I was in the apiary I thought I’d try a “walk away split” with one of my hives that seem to be thriving right now.

Went through my hives today and found over 15 supersedure cells. (I believe they are anyway) I Ended up taking out 2 frames with queen cells and put them in nuk boxes with some resources to try and making 2 splits with them. I also left a few queen cells in the original hive. I figure they know why there doing that better then I do.

Checked out my swarm trap today. Last few weeks I haven’t seen anything but today it was buzzin’. Is it them playing around or are they house shopping? We’ll see in the next couple of days
