Doing the flowers for last weekend’s wedding was a beautiful whirlwind—and packing it all up on Sunday is always a little depressing. The flowers are spent, vases & mechanics are missing, everything has been shoved into closets, candles are everywhere, and suddenly the magic looks decidedly less glamorous.
Because Eliza helped me with the whole thing, she got to see firsthand just how grubby the work can be on Sunday.
After we loaded the car with all kinds of wedding-day craziness, I told her, “You’re not going to believe this, but I need those anemones.”
At the very front entrance of the hotel, I had spotted some Japanese anemones. I clipped a few and tossed them in a bucket because I just knew they needed to come home with me. I knew that they would be perfect with the lilies that had arrived completely wrong: hot pink centers for a green & white wedding - nope!
One thing I always remind myself in this work: make good friends with your fellow vendors, they’re working just as hard - if not harder than you, the venue operators - you’re in their house, and anyone else who crosses your path. Those relationships matter more than you think, and they make all the difference on the long, messy, day-after wedding day clean-ups. Those relationships also give you confidence to cut a few Japanese anemones at the front entrance as you pull out.
